Oct. 13, 2014 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two home regattas and two away regattas this past weekend.
One of the home events was the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship, where the top 18 Laser sailors in the conference were in attendance. This was a very deep fleet this year and the competitors fought their hardest for the four coveted spots at the Singlehanded Nationals.
Navy freshman Addison Hackstaff sailed well all weekend to finish third and punch his ticket to the Nationals. He is the first Navy male to qualify since 2007 and will be headed to Bellingham, Wash. from November 7-9. Three other Navy sailors raced in the Van Duyne, with Gary Prieto finishing sixth, Phil Youngberg coming in 16th and Peter Hogan finishing 17th.
Also at home, Navy's fourth-ranked women hosted 18 top teams at the Navy Fall Women's Regatta. Despite light and shifty winds, 45 total races were completed among very close competition. Navy showed balance throughout the three divisions to finish second overall. Mary Hall and Molly Robertson finished third in A Division. Hannah Hughes and Alex Asuncion were fourth in B and Emma Ferris came in fourth in C.
In another closely contested event, Navy finished sixth out of 14 teams at the David Lee Arnoff Regatta at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. This one could have gone a lot of ways as second through eighth overall were only decided by six points. Patrick Snow and Connor Hendi finished ninth in A division while Jimmy Madigan and Michelle Katz were third in B.
At the Tom Curtis Regatta at Georgetown, Navy finished fifth overall out of 13 teams. This was also a close regatta, but in the end Spencer Nora and Rosie Silverstein came in fourth in A division while Hamrick Morgan and Will Hawley were sixth in B.
