Navy Men's Track Sits Second at Patriot League Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Navy men's track & field squad sit second with 45.83 points on Day 2 of the 2014 Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships. Lehigh leads all eight schools at 60.50 points with 14 scoring events remaining on Sunday.

"Our weight throwers had a huge day today, scoring in four of the eight possible spots," said head coach Stephen Cooksey. "We will need have to everyone not just compete well, but find a way to score in the top four spots on the track to make up ground with Lehigh."

Navy's weight throwers were able to record the majority of the Mids points with 20 total points. Senior Zack Duncavage (League City, Texas) led the way with a second-place performance of 61ft-7.75in (18.31m). Teammates Derrick Petett (4th), Thomas Buffone (5th) and Kyle Fortney (6th) rounded out the next three of four spots with marks of 60ft-1.00in, 57ft-10.5in and 57ft-7.75in, respectively.

Nick Deterding (high jump) and Randon McKain (long jump) recorded performances in the top-four of their respective events to score for Navy. Deterding placed third in the high jump with a mark of 6ft-8.25in (2.04m) and McKain finished fourth in the long jump with a performance of 23ft-1.75in (7.05m).

The Mids 4x800m relay squad of Weston Kennedy, Sean Rynning, Nick Palermo and Max Dunn placed third overall with a finishing time of 7:38.34. The relay squad's third place finish gave Navy six team points.

In the two-day heptathlon, Jesse Holian finished fifth out of nine competitors. Holian placed in the top five in six of the seven potential events. His best performance came in the pole vault, finishing second overall with a mark of 12ft-11.5in (3.95m). Holian tallied 4496 points in the seven total events at the heptathlon and four total team points.

Sunday's competition will feature the finals of the remaining 14 events. The men's running events will begin at 12:00 PM the mile run and the men's field events will begin at 1:00 PM. Navy will try to surpass Lehigh to first place and win its sixth indoor title in the last 11 years.
