Mids Fall in Year's First Army-Navy Competition

Sept. 28, 2014

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Despite six singles matches reaching at least the 16th hole on Sunday, the Navy men's golf team won just one as it surrendered a 10-1 decision to its arch rival in what was the first Army-Navy competition of the 2014-15 year. It marked just the second win by the Black Knights against the Midshipmen in the last seven Star Matches played at West Point.

Army jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage over the Midshipmen after sweeping Navy in Saturday's four-ball matches. Two of the four matches came down to the final two holes, including the battle between Army's Dean Sakata and Willis Huynh vs. Navy team captain August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) and junior David Won (Bothell, Wash.). On the 17th hole, Jonas hit a terrific sand shot to within five feet and was poised to convert for par when Army rolled in a birdie to go one up. On the par five 18th, knowing they needed a birdie to halve the match, Won drove left but was able to put his third shot on the green with a long birdie putt. After a 340-yard drive, Jonas came up short of the green on his second shot, but was unable to convert for a birdie. Army made par as well, and captured the match one up.

Meanwhile Army's Peter Kim and Justin Pagila teamed up to score a 2-and-1 victory over Navy senior Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) and rookie Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.). Navy made the turn at one down, before Pagila and Kim heated up on the back nine. Pagila had four birdies over the last nine holes on his own ball, but Keene and Fricke continued to play well, maintaining a two-hole deficit through 14. On 15, Keene made a great putt for birdie, but Army matched it with one of its own. Navy was still two down going into 17, but was unable to win the hole.

Among Sunday's seven singles matches, six nearly went the distance with two decided on the 16th, three on the 17th and one on the 18th hole.

Navy sophomore Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.), who was one of just three players in the Mids' lineup who had previously played in the annual dual, faced the Black Knights' team captain Robby Hill. Despite falling behind two strokes after eight holes, Terry turned the match around and was two up as they played the 15th. Hill captured the hole with a par, and after Terry just missed a birdie on 16, he approached the 17th hole with a one-up lead. Hill hit the green but his long attempt at birdie slid five feet past the hole. Terry went over the green, but was able to chip to within three feet on his third shot. After Hill missed his putt, Terry calmly sank his three footer to earn a 2-and-1 win for the Mids.

Navy's Keene was one down to Huynh at the turn, but won holes 10 and 11 to get to one up. Huynh won the next three holes to pull back ahead by two. Keene hit beautiful approaches on 15, 16 and 17, but was unable to convert them for birdie, while Huynh parred all three to close the match out, 2-and-1.

Fricke played a fantastic match with Army's Pagila, an All-Patriot League selection last spring. The two went back and forth with Fricke birdieing 15 to bring the match to all square. Pagila birdied 16, but Fricke answered with a birdie on 17, making the match all even heading to the 18th. Both players hit terrific second shots into the par five, with Fricke's ball going just over the green into the rough. Fricke played first, but was unable to convert for birdie, while Pagila two putted for a birdie and secured the 1 up victory.

Sophomore Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) played a solid match against Sakata, Army's leading scorer this fall with a 70.1 stroke average. The match was close throughout, with Tallman birdieing the par four 15th to pull even for the day. Sakata hit his approach to inside of three feet and holed his putt for birdie to win 16. On 17, Tallman played his approach to the green and had a birdie putt inside of Sakata's. Sakata played first, choosing to putt from the fringe, and he rolled in a 30-foot putt for birdie to close out a 2-and-1 victory.

"Our guys knew they had an uphill battle today after falling behind in the four-ball matches yesterday, but unfortunately we were unable to convert as many putts as Army," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "Five of the seven matches went to the 17th hole today, which shows the character of our team. Despite being behind, they never conceded."

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Oct. 13-14 when they take part in the Maryland Terrapin Invitational held at the Woodmont Country Club.
