2014 Navy Fall Classic Results ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Paced by team captain
August Jonas' (Jacksonville, Fla.) 3-under par 68 in Sunday's final round, the Navy men's golf team shot an 8-over par 292 over the final 18 holes of action to place fifth out of 10 teams at the 21st annual Navy Fall Classic played at the
Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis.
The Mids entered the final round in sixth place, just seven strokes out of the lead held by Seton Hall. And while they nearly mirrored their score from the opening round (291-292), they were able to push up a spot in the final standings after Cornell shot a 17-over par 301 over the final 18 holes and plumetted from second to seventh in the final standings.
"I thought the Navy Blue team played consistently over the weekend, averaging 72.88 for the 36 hole event," said
Pat Owen, who is in his 25th year leading the Midshipmen.
"Augie (Jonas) and Bryce (Keene) continued to lead the way with both of them exhibiting great ball-striking and course management skills throughout the tournament."
Jonas, who entered his senior season with a 75.60 stroke average, anchored Navy's efforts for the weekend with a 3-under par 139 to place fifth. It's the fourth time he has finished the Navy Fall Classic among the top 15 and the second time in the top 5. The senior captain was in a tie for eighth after shooting par in the opening round, but came back to shoot three strokes under to capture his fourth career top-5 finish.
Classmate
Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) put together a 2-over par 144 to earn his first career top-10 finish, tying for 10th. Like Jonas, Keene was tied for eighth going into the final round, but was 2-over for the day to slip to 10th.
Rookie
Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) placed 33th with an 8-over par 150 (76-74), followed by sophomore
Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) in 37th with a 151 (73-78) and freshman
Lawrence Tu (Irvine, Calif.) in 44th with a 155 (78-77).
Navy also fielded a second team, Navy Gold, which finished 10th with a 40-over par 608. Sophomore
Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) was the top finisher among the Gold squad with a 3-over par 145. Terry, who averaged a 75.6 his rookie season, placed 13th, shooting 1-over in the opening round and 2-over in the second. Junior

Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.) in 44th with a 155 (82-73), junior
Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) in 51st with a 159 (81-78) and junior
Zeke Shaffer (Radford, Va.) in 53rd with a 161 (81-80).
Meanwhile, four Navy freshmen saw their first action playing on an individual basis in the tournament.
Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) tied for 21st with a 5-over par 147 (75-72), while
Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) with 40th with a 152 (77-75),
Wade Hayes (Richmond, Va.) was 51st with a 159 (74-85) and
Eashwar Thenpattinam (San Jose, Calif.) was 53rd with a 161 (83-78).
"Playing more than one squad is always a great way for us to start the season, as it gives everyone on our team a chance to compete in a tournament on their home course," added Owen. "I was particularly happy with the way
Devin Terry and
Eric Terminello played. We are a young team, so experience is key to our improvement over the course of the season."
Seton Hall was able to hold off Delaware in the final round to capture the team title by one stroke over the Blue Hens. The Pirates shot a 1-over par 569 (284-285) for the weekend, while Delaware shaved off 6 strokes from its opening-round score to finish with a 2-over par 570 (288-282). Georgetown (290-288=578) edged Towson (290-291=581) for third, while the Mids rounded out the top five.
Georgetown's Cole Berman, a freshman, took individual medalist honors after winning a playoff against Delaware's Erik Dulik, also a first-year player. Berman shot rounds of 69 and 68, while Dulik shot an impressive 5-under par 66 in the final round to force the playoff.
The Mids return to action next weekend when they make the trip to Johns Island, S.C. to take part in the Kiawah Invitational played at The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. One of the world's top courses, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is ranked the No. 4 public golf course in the United States and 25th amongst the 100 Greatest U.S. Golf Courses according to Golf Digest. It has hosted the Ryder Cup and the 2012 PGA Championship.
