Women's Swimming Wins Rutgers Invite

Nov. 22, 2015

PISCATAWAY, N.J. â€"â€" The Navy women's swimming team totaled over 2,000 points to win the Frank Elm Invitational Sunday in Piscataway, N.J. The Mids accrued 2,096.50 points to outdistance second-place and meet-host Rutgers by 593.50 points.

Navy placed multiple swimmers into the championship final in each of the 13 individual events contested over the three days of the meet, with three or more Mids qualifying for 10 of those finals.

"I was very pleased with how the weekend went for us," said Navy head coach John Morrison. "It was great to see us get up there and race each and every day in a hard meet. We had people competing in more events this weekend than they will all year, and that is a big challenge. But we responded to and fought through that challenge with some great efforts."

Navy earned a pair of wins and four additional second-place finishes on Friday's opening day of the meet. Lauren Barber (Fr., New Wilmington, Pa.) recorded a time of 2:00.36 to win the 200 individual medley event, while Kenzie Margroum (Jr., Fort Thomas, Ky.) followed with a clocking of 23.27 to win the 50 free. Maddie Thompson (Sr., Jersey Shore, Pa.) placed second to Margroum in the 50 free with her time of 23.36, Jenny Smith (So., Columbus, Ohio) took the silver medal in the 500 free thanks to her time of 4:52.41, and both the 200 free (1:33.36) and 400 medley relay (3:46.22) teams placed second in their respective events.

"It was a good overall performance for us from top to bottom," said Morrison of Navy's day one effort. "We put up some really good times."

Navy's lone win on Saturday came in the final event of the session, the 800 free relay. The foursome of Barber, Margroum, Casey Lawson (Fr., Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) and Thompson posted a time of 7:22.58 to win the event.

The middle day of the competition began with Navy placing third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.41. Smith followed with a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:22.65), with Barber finishing in fourth place (4:24.31) in the final. Hannah Briant (Fr., Brielle, N.J.) would place third (55.82) and Lauren Greenberg (Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) fifth (56.17) in the 100 fly, then Lawson (1:49.76) and Margroum (1:49.91) placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 freestyle final. Barber was Navy's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke as she placed fourth (1:03.25), one spot ahead of teammate Ellen Bradford's (Sr., Knoxville, Tenn.) showing (1:03.50). The final individual event held prior to the 800 free relay was the 100 backstroke, and that saw Kaitlyn O'Reilly (So., Farmington, Minn.) finish in third place (56.14).

"I was very pleased with our Saturday," said Morrison. "It was one of the better second day of competition in terms of racing at an in-season meet we have had. We fought through a lot of soreness to have good results in the morning, then we came back and swam even better at night."

The Mids began Sunday by having Smith (16:45.47) and Sara Lopez (Jr., Lenaxa, Kan.) (16:48.08) finish first and second, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle timed final. Lawson followed with a third-place finish in the 200 back (2:00.62), then Margroum finished in second place in the 100 free (50.42). The individual event portion of the meet concluded with Bradford placing third in the 200 breast (2:16.48) and Hanna Gillcrist (Jr., Burlington, Ky.) leading the Mids with a fourth-place showing in the 200 fly (2:02.02).

Navy closed out the meet with its 400 freestyle relay team of Barber, Molly Kuenstler (So., Villa Park, Ill.), Margroum and Thompson posting a time of 3:23.03 to win the event and break the pool record set by North Carolina in 2009.

"It was great to be able to end the weekend in that way," said Morrison of the pool record. "Our focus in training for three-day meets is being ready for the events held on the final day. We performed real well today.

"I am pleased with where we are at in terms of our training this season."

Navy's divers did not compete at the meet. They instead took part in the Nike Cup at North Carolina along with the Navy men's swimming and diving team.

Navy will be off from competition until playing host to Army West Point on Dec. 10.
