VESTAL, N.Y. - Senior Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.), along with sophomores Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.), Jadaen Bernstein (Glen Gardner, N.J.) and Steban Cervantes (Chula Vista, Calif.) placed among the top six to lead a contingent of 23 Navy wrestlers who competed at the seventh-annual Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open held Sunday at Binghamton's Events Center. The action-packed competition began at 9:00 am with the final curtain call at nearly 11:00 pm.
Davis, who placed in five tournaments a year ago, paved the way for the Mids with his fourth-place showing at 133 pounds. Davis opened up with back-to-back wins over Franklin & Marshall's Danny Martoccio (6-4) and Lehigh's Ryan Pomrinca (6-3) before dropping to the consolation bracket following a 9-5 loss to Jeff Ott of Harvard. Davis bounced back with wins against Michael Russo of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club (9-8), Rutgers' Peter Lipari (forfeit) and Binghamton's Jake Nicholson (4-2) to earn a spot in the third-place match. Davis, however, would come up short against Lehigh's Scott Parker, 9-4, and finished fourth.
Also taking fourth was Miller, who came into the tournament ranked 18th according to InterMat. Miller dominated his first three foes, dealing Sacred Heart's Mark Boyle a 20-2 tech fall, while following up with back-to-back pins against Devon Van Cura of Penn State (0:41) and Lock Haven's Adam Mackie (1:23). Miller's winning streak was snapped, however, in the semifinals when he came up two points short in a decision against 10th-ranked Lorenzo Thomas of Penn. Miller let his frustration out on Princeton's Scott Gibbons in the consolation semis with a 20-2 tech fall, but did not wrestle the third-place bout against Binghamton's Steven Schneider due to injury.
Ranked 19th at 174 pounds, Bernstein took fifth with a 4-2 record. The reigning EIWA Champion at 174 pounds opened the tournament with three straight wins, including a 5-3 decision over Sacred Heart's Conan Schuster to propel him into the semifinals. Bernstein, however, could not solve the second-ranked wrestler in the country, Cornell's Brian Realbuto, dropping the match 5-0. Bernstein fell in the consolation semis to Lehigh's Ben Haas, but captured fifth place after Penn's Casey Kent was unable to finish out the tournament because of an injury.
Cervantes had a strong showing at 197 pounds where he would finish in a tie for fifth. The second-year standout beat Lock Haven's Matt Moore by way of major decision (13-2), before edging Triston Engle of SUNY Brockport, 4-2. Cervantes went on score a last second pin over Army West Point's Nate Dow (6:42) to punch his ticket into the semifinals where he would meet Cornell's Jake Taylor. Taylor would outlast Cervantes with a 4-3 victory, while the Navy sophomore was forced to bow out of his final two matches due to injury.
Senior 197-pound Michael Woulfe (Oak Park, Ill.) came up a match short of placing. He won his first two bouts by fall before Penn's Frank Mattiace scored a 9-3 over Woulfe to send him to the consolation round. Woulfe defeated Ben Honis of Finger Lakes Wrestling Club, 11-1, but dropped a heartbreaker to Cortland's Joe Giaramita in sudden victory (10-8) in the consolation quarters.
The 23 Navy wrestlers combined to win 48 matches that featured eight wins by fall, eight major decisions and three tech falls. Miller, meanwhile, pushed his career mark to 27-1 in matches decided by fall. He is tied for seventh on the Mids' all-time list for pins and is four outside of the top five.
The Mids return to action next Sunday when they will send teams to the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich., as well as the East Stroudsburg Open in Pennsylvania.
