ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Competing in its first of two home meets this outdoor season, the Navy men's track and field team placed first out of three teams Saturday afternoon at Ingram Field in Annapolis, Maryland. Navy recorded seven IC4A qualifying performances.
"Despite the less than ideal weather today, we had some strong performances," Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "We were focused on refining some events and hope to carry it over into next weekend's meet against Army."
Navy throwers continued their hot start to the outdoor season, recording five of the team's seven IC4A qualifying performances.
Sophomore Griffie Loy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) led all throwers in the shot put with a mark of 52ft-10in (16.10m). Freshman Sean Richards (Skillman, N.J.) grabbed first place in the javelin with an IC4A-qualifying throw of 193ft-9in (59.05m).
In the hammer throw, Navy tallied the top three spots with IC4A-qualifying throws. Senior captain Tom Buffone (Freehold, N.J.) led the Mids with a first-place throw of 188ft-8in. Freshman John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) and junior William Grammer finished right behind teammate Buffone with marks of 181ft-4in (55.28m) and 177ft-2in (54.01m), respectively.
On the track, Navy's distance runners tallied the final two IC4A-qualifying times in the 10000m run. Freshman Samuel Williams (Warren Center, Pa.) and sophomore Ryan Speir (Burr Ridge, Ill.) went 1-2, respectively, with times of 30:42.00 and 30:52.00.
Freshman Tyler Russell (Fort Collins, Colo.) grabbed first place in both the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. Russell tallied a mark of 6ft-2.25in (1.89) in the high jump and a time of 16.40 in the 110m hurdles.
Navy will prepare to host archrival Army in the annual dual meet on Saturday at Ingram Field. The men's meet will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by the women's meet at 3 p.m.
