March 30, 2015 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three regattas over a busy weekend this past Saturday and Sunday. Navy competed in its last regular season weekend of team racing before the conference championship begins in two weeks.
Navy placed seventh out of eight teams at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race at Old Dominion University. It was a cold and windy event with a ton of racing. The team sailed three full round robins and two extra races over the weekend with temperatures in the 30s and low 40s and there were some snowflakes on Saturday. The wind ranged from 10 to 20+ knots. Navy's skippers were Mary Hall, Michael Popp and Patrick Snow. Alex Asuncion, Emma Ferris, Connor Hendi, Manuel Inserni-Pagan and Will Hawley served as crew.
The weather was very similar at nearby Hampton University for the MAISA / SAISA Team Race. Only two rounds were completed in the eight-team field, with puffy and shifty winds challenging the fleet. Navy finished sixth overall and Charlie Peck, Philip Youngberg and Peter Hogan were the skippers. Molly Hanson, Sahara Graft and Amelia Winn served as crew.
The Jan Friis Team Race was originally scheduled at Harvard University, but was moved to Roger Williams University due to the Charles River being still mostly frozen. It wasn't much warmer in Rhode Island, however, as it snowed hard during Saturday's racing. A young Navy team competed in a very strong field of New England schools and won some impressive races. In the end, Navy finished ninth out of 10 teams with Michael Madigan, Jimmy Madigan, Addison Hackstaff and Gary Prieto skippering and Molly Robertson, Michelle Katz and Brittany Webb-Martin serving as crews.
Navy will compete at the Prosser Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y. next weekend.
