Sept. 13, 2015 • 2015 Navy Fall Classic - Round 1
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Shooting a pair of 70s, rookie Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) and junior Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.) joined forces to lead the Navy men's golf team to sixth after the opening round of the 36-hole Navy Fall Classic Sunday afternoon at the Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis.
For Peters, it was his first collegiate round after coming to the Academy following an All-State (Ariz.) performance as the state runner-up his senior year, while Allen turned in his lowest career round. Sophomore Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) finished the afternoon 2-over par (73), while sophomore Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) was 8-over (79) and freshman Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) was 9-over (80).
In addition to the Navy Blue squad, the Mids also fielded White and Gold squads who finished the day tied for eighth and 10th, respectively. The White team, tied with Delaware with a 300 (+16), featured three sophomores and two freshmen, all of which shot under 80. Davidsonville native Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) anchored the team with a 2-over par 73, while fellow freshman Gregory Sibick (Williamsville, N.Y.) was a stroke back and just one shot out of the top 20. Sophomore Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) carded a 75, while sophomores Lawrence Tu (Irvine, Calif.) and Eashwar Thenpattinam (San Jose, Calif.) stand 44th and 48th in the standings with a 78 and 79, respectively.
The Gold squad, meanwhile, shot a 26-over par 310 and was led by senior Zeke Shaffer's (Radford, Va.) 4-over par 75. Junior Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) shot a 77, while senior team captain David Won (Bothell, Wash.) is in 44th with a 78. Junior Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) is just outside of the top 50 with a 9-over par 80 and senior Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) closed out the scoring with a 10-over par 81.
With three players inside the top five, Princeton holds a four-stroke advantage over Georgetown, 280-284. The Tigers' 4-under par 280 is tied as the seventh-lowest 18-hole score in the tournament's 22-year history and best since Towson shot a 280 in the opening round of the 2013 Navy Fall Classic. Seton Hall is two strokes behind the Hoyas in third with a 286, while George Mason (287) and Le Moyne (289) round out the top five. Seton Hall's David Cha and Le Moyne's John Clare share the lead with both players shooting a 4-under par 67 in the opening round.
The field will be back in action on Monday with tee times beginning at 8:30 am.
