ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Freshman guard Delante Jones poured in 23 points to lead American (4-15, 2-6 PL) to a 63-58 upset win at Navy (15-6, 6-2 PL) in Alumni Hall on Wednesday evening. American snapped Navy's six-game winning streak.
Navy currently sits in second place in the Patriot League at 6-2, behind Bucknell (8-1) and in front of Colgate (6-3).
American's Jalen Rhea came off the bench to score 15 points on five 3-pointers and Jesse Reed scored 12 points while playing the entire 40 minutes.
Navy opened the game on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes, but American responded with a 15-4 run over the next 11 minutes and took a 26-24 lead into halftime.
American's lead grew to as many as nine points in the second half at 54-45 before Navy made a late rally to cut the margin to 54-52 after a Shawn Anderson layup with two minutes left.
However, Navy failed to score on its next three possessions and American got a critical jump hook in the lane from Jesse Reed and then sealed the game by making 7-of-8 free throws in the final 28 seconds.
"I thought it was a poor performance by our team," said head coach Ed DeChellis. "We didn't play good enough defense, we didn't rebound the ball and we didn't take care of the ball. We didn't execute well offensively. But give credit to [American]. They made every big shot, they made their free throws down the stretch. Jesse Reed made a big shot at the end of the game."
Navy had a season-low 25 rebounds and was outrebounded by American, 31-25. American also scored 19 points off of Navy's 13 turnovers, while the Mids scored only eight points off of American's 15 turnovers.
Navy was also just 2-of-11 (18 percent) on 3-pointers and American made nine triples.
Senior Tilman Dunbar led Navy with 14 points and sophomore Jace Hogan added 11 points and four boards. Anderson tallied 10 points, five rebounds four assists and two steals.
Junior Tim Abruzzo, making his first career start, scored eight points and made both of Navy's 3-pointers.
Senior Will Kelly blocked two shots on Wednesday to increase his season total to 59, the ninth most in school history. Kelly also moved into a tie with Michael Heary ('98) for 12th place on Navy's career games played list (113).
Navy falls to 0-6 when failing to score at least 60 points. The Mids are 15-0 when hitting the 60-point mark.
Navy will begin a two-game road trip at Holy Cross on Saturday before playing at Army West Point on Monday evening in a makeup game.
