Jan. 5, 2016 This Week
After nearly a month off from competition to focus on finals and celebrate the holidays, the 15th-ranked Navy squash team returns to action on Wednesday when it plays host to #1 Trinity. Action is set for 4:00 pm at the Halsey International Squash Courts.
The Ladder
Navy played is last two matches prior to the break with a bit of a shakeup to the ladder. Sophomore Jack Herold defeated freshman Senen Ubina in a challenge match to take the #1 spot, while junior Reed Whitney took the #3 position from junior Randy Back. Heading into 2016, the ladder appears ...
1. Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.), 2. Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.), 3. Reed Whitney (Ladue, Mo.), 4. Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.), 5. Bill Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.), 6. Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.), 7. Alex Patricolo (Southampton, N.Y.), 8. Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.), 9. Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.), 10. Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.)
The Mids
After riding a 14-match winning streak to open the season, Navy has lost four in a row in what has been a challenging schedule. The Mids have dropped matches to #7 Penn (9-0), #8 Princeton (8-1), #11 Dartmouth (7-2) and #9 Drexel (8-1). Their upcoming schedule does not let up, however, with its nine remaining regular-season matches against teams all ranked among the top 22 and three in the top 10. That stretch begins with the reigning National Champion Trinity Bantams on Wednesday.
Jack Herold and Senen Ubina lead the way in the wins column for the Mids, as Herold stands 15-3 and Ubina is 15-2. Freshman Dylan Sweeney is 14-3, while senior captain Bill Kacergis, junior Reed Whitney and freshman Jamie Kjorlien have all produced 13-4 marks this season.
Kacergis has amassed a 65-28 record and stands 14th on Navy's career wins list. He is one shy of tying 13th-place Hunter Beck (2010-14) former team captain and brother of current Navy junior Randy Beck. Meanwhile, Kacergis needs five wins to become one of just 11 players in program history to reach 70 career wins.
The Opponent
The top-ranked Bantams of Trinity are coming off the program's 15th College Squash Association National Championship after posting a 20-1 record. Trinity has played just three matches to date, scoring wins over #17 Bates (7-2), #21 Bowdoin (9-0) and #7 Dartmouth (9-0). It will face #9 Drexel on Tuesday afternoon before facing the Mids on Wednesday.
The Bantams are led by junior co-captain Affeeq Ismail who won the Molloy "B" Division title at the College Squash Association Individual National Championship, while sophomore Rick Penders won the Pool "A" Division consolation crown. Penders has occupied the #1 spot on the ladder where he is 2-1, while Ismail has played the #4 position and is 2-0.
Series History
Navy leads the series against Trinity, 31-12, however, the Bantams have won eight straight against the Mids. The last time the Mids defeated Trinity was on Jan. 31, 1992, in a match played at Yale.
The Mids hold a 22-4 advantage in matches played in Annapolis, though Trinity has won the last two (9-0 in 2014 and 8-1 in 2004). Navy's last win in Annapolis against Trinity was Feb. 1, 1985 (6-3).
