BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomores John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) and Tyler Russell (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the Mids with first-place performances in the weight throw and high jump to help put the Navy men's track and field team at the top of the Patriot League Championship standings on Saturday at Boston University's Tennis and Track Center.
After two days of competition, Navy leads the nine-team field with 65 team points. Bucknell (46), Army West Point (38) and Boston (36) all are within 29 points of the Mids and round out the top four. Lehigh (19), Lafayette (12), American (9), Holy Cross (6) and Colgate (3) complete the nine-team field in that order.
"Our throwers gave us a huge lift to begin the day and our athletes that competed afterwards followed their performance to build our lead," Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "Tyler [Russell] and John [Campbell] continue to perform at a high level and it showed today on the big stage."
Navy's throwers began Saturday's meet by tallying 19 team points for the Mids. Campbell topped the 12-thrower field with a personal-best throw of 62ft-6.25in (19.03m). Teammates Billy Grammer (Heber Springs, Ark.) and Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with throws of 57ft-5.75in (17.52m) and 56ft-0in (17.07m).
Russell captured the individual title in the high jump. The Fort Collins, Colo., native recorded a personal-best performance, leaping over the bar at 6ft-11.75in (2.13).
Navy's 4x800-meter relay team of Roberto Swersky (Morris Plains, N.J.), Justin Hyytinen (Farmington, Minn.), Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) and Nick Palermo (Coconut Creek, Fla.) placed first, crossing the finish line at 7:30.73. The four Mids relay time is fifth best in program history.
Junior Lucas Stalnaker (Tega Cay, S.C.) earned his second consecutive all-league finish in the 5,000-meter run, placing second with a time of 14:26.00. Teammate Mitchell Pratt (Temple City, Calif.) finished fifth with a time of 14:29.28.
In the heptathlon, freshman Benjamin Stewart (Charlestown, R.I.), who had not competed in an official heptathlon before this weekend's event, placed fourth with 4,553 points. Sitting seventh after four events on Friday, Stewart made up ground in the final three events with second-place finishes in the pole vault (13ft-11.25in; 4.25m) and 1,000-meter (2:39.78) run and a fifth-place performance in the 60-meter hurdles (9.16).
Navy sprinter's Jordan Sartor-Francis (Jonesboro, Ga.), Devin Enslen (Alamogordo, N.M.), Kordell Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Malcolm White (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Demetrius Lanier (Palm Coast, Fla.) all qualified in their preliminary races to advance to Sunday's finals. Sartor-Francis and Enslen both recorded top five qualifying times in the 60-meter and 200-meter dash. Williams and White earned bids to Sunday's 60-meter hurdles final and Lanier recorded the final qualifying spot in the 200-meter dash finals.
Navy will look to add to its lead and capture its fourth consecutive league title on Sunday. The final 16 events will begin at 10 a.m. with the pole vault and triple jump.
