ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's basketball team (16-8, 7-4 PL) suffered an 83-72 loss to Boston University (13-11, 6-5 PL) at Alumni Hall on Wednesday evening. Navy was playing its third game in the last five days.
John Papale led four Boston players in double figures with 18 points and Kyle Foreman added 17 on 4-of-4 3-point shooting. Eric Fanning scored 15, Cheddi Mosely had 11 and Nathan Dieudonne posted eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Navy sophomore Jace Hogan scored a career-best 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting and also had six rebounds. Senior guard Tilman Dunbar tallied 20 points with five assists and senior center Will Kelly had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
Boston led wire-to-wire and shot a blistering 68 percent (15-of-22) in the first half to take a 45-35 lead at the break. The Terriers finished the game at 58 percent (25-of-43) and were 9-of-15 on 3-pointers (60 percent).
Meanwhile, Navy shot 45 percent from the floor (29-of-64) and just 13 percent on 3-pointers (2-of-16). Navy missed its last 10 3-pointers of the game as it was trying to make its comeback.
"I thought we played very poorly tonight," said head coach Ed DeChellis. "Defensively, we just can't give up that many points. We played a little bit better in the second half and we were one shot away from making things interesting, but we couldn't make the basket. Boston was very good tonight. We beat them up there and they came down here and gave us their best shot."
Boston took a 7-0 lead to open the game before Navy fought back with a 6-0 spurt. However, Kelly went to the bench with two fouls just 4:17 into the game and the Terriers responded with another run to take an eight-point lead at 18-10.
Navy cut the margin to two points after a layup by Hogan and a layup by Edward Alade, but Boston U. used a 13-2 run and the lead eventually grew to 45-35 at halftime.
Boston increased its lead to 15 points with 11:36 remaining in the second half after Papale's 3-pointer made the score 63-48.
Dunbar came through in the clutch for the Mids, scoring six straight points as Navy was able to cut the deficit to four at 73-69 with 2:33 to go. However, Navy went cold from the field, missing its next six shots while Boston made its free throws to extend the final score to 83-72.
Navy had 17 assists against just seven turnovers, while forcing Boston to commit 19 turnovers. Boston outrebounded Navy, 39-26.
With his 20 points, Dunbar moved in to 24th place on Navy's all-time scoring list with 953. He passed Jason Jeanpierre ('03) and Sitapha Savane ('24).
Dunbar is tied for ninth in program history with 95 career games started and Kelly is tied for eighth with 116 career games played.
The teams split the season series as the Terriers avenged an 83-67 loss to Navy in Boston on Jan. 6.
The Mids remain in second place at 7-4 in the Patriot League standings behind first-place Bucknell (9-2).
Navy will next host Colgate (10-12, 6-5 PL) on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
