ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€" Sophomore John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) highlighted Navy's Spring Invitational with three IC4A-qualifying performances and two first-place finishes on Saturday at Ingram Field.
"We had some solid performances at our home meet today," Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "John [Campbell] did very well in his throwing events and hopefully he continues at an upward trajectory."
Campbell won both the discus and hammer throw events by decisive marks. The sophomore throw placed first in the discus throw by 22ft-6in with a mark of 169ft-3in (51.59m) and followed up with a first-place hammer throw of 182ft-0in (55.47m), which was 1ft-4in farther than teammate Billy Grammer (Heber Springs, Ark.).
Junior Griffie Loy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) captured first in the shot put with a throw of 54ft-1in (16.48m). Campbell finished 11.5 inches behind Loy with a throw of 53ft-1.5in (16.19m).
On the track, senior Jordan Sartor-Francis (Jonesboro, Ga.) ran his first outdoor race of the season, capturing first in the 100-meter dash with an IC4A-qualifying time of 10.53. Senior Nicholas Palermo, also competing in his first outdoor race of 2016, placed first in the 800-meter run with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:52.85.
In the 1,500-meter race, sophomore Cory Donley (Salina, Kan.) and junior Ryan McCoy (New Glarus, Wis.) recorded IC4A-qualifying times as they finished first and third, respectively. Donley crossed the finished line at 3:52.85 and McCoy finished 3.23 seconds later for a third-place mark of 3:56.08.
Junior Hale Bullen (Annapolis, Md.) highlighted Navy's distance runners at the Raleigh Relays, placing sixth out of 25 runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.92. In the 5,000-meter run, seniors Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) and Sam Peckham (Valencia, Calif.) placed 18th and 21st, respectively out of 101 runners. Schroeder crossed the tape at 14:06.46 and teammate Peckham finished 3.24 seconds later at 14:09.74. Junior Ryan Speir (Burr Ridge, Ill.) placed 35th out of 67 competitors in the 10,000-meter run with a mark of 30:30.22.
Navy will travel North to face archrival Army West Point on Saturday, April 2 at Shea Stadium.
