ANNAPOLIS, Md. - With three players positioned within the top 10 of the individual standings, the Navy men's golf team shares the team lead following the opening round of the Navy Spring Invitational played at the Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis. The Mids, along with Methodist University, shot a 1-over par 285 on Saturday despite intermittent rain showers and breezy conditions.
While Navy and Methodist stand atop the 10-team field, the two programs hold a solid 7-stroke advantage over third-place Wagner who was 8-over for the day. St. John's is in fourth place at 10-over, while Saint Francis rounds out the top five with an 11-over par. Emory's Connor Yakubov and Methodist's Mason Stutler, meanwhile, are atop the individual leader board after posting a 3-under par 68.
Sophomore Eric Terminello (White Plains, N.Y.) shot the low round of his career with a 2-under par 69 to sit just a stroke behind the leaders in third. He previous best round was a 1-over par 72 at the Navy Fall Classic a year ago in what was his first collegiate tournament. Classmate Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.), who is fifth in the standings, turned in a 1-under par 70 that included five birdies and an eagle. His drive on the 333-yard sixth hole landed on the green, and he sank a 25-footer for his eagle. Rookie Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) shot a 1-over par to close out the opening round tied for 10th. Starobin's day featured a chip-in for eagle on the par four second hole.
Junior Connor Tallman (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had an up and down day and came to the 18th hole four over for his round. Faced with a 30-foot breaking putt, he calmly rolled it in for a 74, pulling the team into a tie with Methodist. Meanwhile freshman Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.), who owns the team's low stroke average, struggled in the opening round with a 7-over par 78 and sits in 41st.
The Navy Gold squad, meanwhile, finished the first round tied with Emory for eighth with an 18-over par 302. Junior Devin Terry (La Crosse, Wis.) and sophomore Ethan Mead (Charlotte, N.C.) both finished the day with a 3-over par 74, while rookie Paul Mauer (Eagleville, Pa.) sits in 30th with a 5-over par 76. Senior team captain David Won (Bothell, Wash.) and junior Ben Allen (San Marino, Calif.) turned in a 7-over par 78.
Four Navy players are competing as individuals, including freshman Greg Sibick who is 30th with a 5-over par 76. Sophomore Eashwar Thenpattinam (San Jose, Calif.) is 36th with a 77, senior Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) is 41with a 78 and senior Zeke Shaffer (Radford, Va.) is 60th with an 83.
Sunday's final round is slated to begin at 8:30 am.
