Steve Schroeder and Navy Field Athletes Shine at Virginia Challenge

April 23, 2016

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Navy men's track and field senior Steve Schroeder (Monticello, Ill.) led the Navy men's track and field team at the Virginia Challenge with the third-fastest time in program history in the 1,500-meter run on Saturday.

"Steve [Schroeder] has had a very strong senior campaign, both indoor and outdoors so far," Navy head coach Stephen Cooksey said. "Along with Schroeder, there were some very good outings among our field athletes that we hope they can sustain as we approach the league championship."

Among the 80 runners that compete in the 1,500-meter race, Schroeder placed 10th with a time of 3:42.95. Schroeder's mark ranks third in program history behind former Navy All-Americans Ron Harris (3:42.84) and Greg Keller (3:41.99).

Senior Jay Stell (Carlsbad, N.M.) continued to improve his season mark in the javelin, placing third with an IC4A-qualifying throw of 225ft-6in (68.75m). Stell's mark was three feet further than his previous season-best throw of 225ft-3in (68.66m), which he set at the Army-Navy Star Meet.

Sophomore John Campbell recorded two top-10 finishes in the throwing events, placing second in the shot put and ninth in the hammer throw. Campbell tallied a second-place mark of 55ft-6.5in (16.93m) in the shot put and followed up with a ninth-place throw of 197ft-2in (60.11m) in the hammer.

Junior Khaalif Wolfe (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and sophomore Tyler Russell (Fort Collins, Colo.) placed in the top five of their respective field events. Wolfe placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 48ft-0in (14.63m), while Russell finished fourth in the high jump at 6ft-11in (2.11m).

On the track, senior Jordan Sartor-Francis (Jonesboro, Ga.) recorded two top-ten finishes. Sartor-Francis placed seventh in the 100-meter and eighth in the 200-meter dash. The senior sprinter crossed the finish line at 10.57 in the 100-meter and 21.17 in the 200-meter.

Junior Hale Bullen (Annapolis, Md.) recorded a career-best mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Bullen placed 20th with a time of 9:11.07, shaving off 0:00.85 seconds.

At the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey, junior Ryan Speir (Burr Ridge, Ill.) highlighted the meet for Navy, placing third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 31:07.01.

Navy pole vaulters Michael Brunoforte and Stefano Pineda placed 12th and 13th, respectively. Brunoforte tallied a mark of 15ft-5in (4.70m), while teammate Pineda recorded a mark of 14ft-11in (4.55m).

Navy will compete at the 122nd Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania next weekend.
