ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's track and field team posted an impressive victory at the Navy Spring Invitational, defeating George Washington, American University, and Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday at Ingram Field.
The Mids tallied a team score of 203, followed by George Washington, American, and UMES.
"We did fairly well today," head coach Stephen Cooksey said after the meet. "Overall we were able to get the back-line guys to step up, which is good because we are going to need them. We feel better about some of the holes we need to fill. Everyone is stepping up their game."
In the running events, the Midshipmen posted wins in the 100m, the 200m, and the 400m dashes. Aaron Watson posted an 11.79 to claim the 100m, while Devin Enslen won the 200m with a time of 21.33. The 400m saw Nathan Gainey take first with a 48.42. American University won the 800m and 1500m races, while Navy's Lucas Stalnaker notched a time of 14:36.97 to win the 5000m.
The Mids recorded wins in both the 110m and 400m hurdles with Kordell Williams winning both events with times of 14.59 and 54.75, respectively. Cameron Allen of Navy won the 3000m steeplechase.
In the relays, Navy's team of Watson, Enslen, Evan Lexo, and Demetrius Lanier clocked a 41.71 in the 4x100m relay. The team of Nicholas Williams, Cameron DeCoursey, John Finnegan, and Jack Martensen won the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:24.21.
In the field events, Navy's Tyler Russell won the high jump with a mark of 6ft-6in (1.98m), while Ryan Herrera-Murphy took first in the pole vault with a height of 15ft-11in (4.85m). American's Trevor Patton won the men's long jump with Navy's John Bryant notched a distance of 47ft-5in (14.45m) to win the triple jump. Joseph Loy hurled the shot put for a distance of 53ft-2.75in (16.22m) to win the event. John Campbell won the discus and the hammer with throws of 171ft-2in (52.19m) and 189ft-10in (57.86m), respectively. Sean Richards closed out the throwing events with a distance of 214ft-1in (65.26m) to win the javelin throw.
Navy returns to Ingram Field on Saturday, April 1, as the Mids host Army at 10:00 a.m. The meet is part of the Army-Navy Star Series.
"Everybody is thinking about what happened indoors at Army," Cooksey said. "We want to turn the tables on them. Army is a very tough team and it will be a tough meet, but we are looking forward to it."
