LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Navy men's track and field team concluded competition in the 2017 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Preliminary Championships in Lexington, Ky. at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex on the campus of the University of Kentucky. The Midshipmen had five student-athletes --
John Campbell (discus),
Griffie Loy (shot put),
Stefano Pineda (pole vault),
Sean Richards (javelin), and
Lucas Stalnaker (10,000-meter run) -- all competed in the three-day Regional.
Over the three-day event, the athletes dealt with extreme weather conditions that caused several delays throughout the meets which effected results during the weekend.
"We did a pretty good job," head coach Stephen Cooksey. "Some of those guys at that level can be a little stressed and not do as well, but our guys competed well. It's good that they are getting comfortable at that level. Stalnaker did a great job and had a great race. He was right up front the whole time and had a chance to win it."
Stalnaker began the weekend posting his second fastest time of the season, 29:57.92, to finish third in the 10,000m and advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. Butler's Erik Peterson won the event with a time of 29:55.06, while Samford's Arsène Guillorel took second with a time of 29:56.20. Stalnaker was third just 16 hundredths of a second faster than Kentucky's Jacob Thomson (29:58.08) who came in fourth. Middle Tennessee's Jacob Choge rounded out the top five with a time of 29:58.13.
In addition to Stalnaker, Richards took part in the javelin on day one of the three-day track and field competition. Richards battled rain and other competitors to post a throw of 59.84m (196ft-04.00in) to finish in 24th.
On the second day of competition, Loy and Pineda competed in the shot put and the pole vault, respectively. Loy recorded a throw of 17.61m (57-09.50) to finish in the top half of the competitors with a 24th place finish. Pineda posted a height of 4.85m (15-11.00) in the pole vault to finish in 37th in the competition.
Campbell notched a throw of 52.88m (173-06) in the discus on the final day of competition. The junior finished 32nd in the event.
Stalnaker will represent the Navy men's track and field team in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 7-10.
