Sprint Returns to Action with Road Trip to Caldwell

Mids look to improve to 2-0 in the CSFL-South Division.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (2-1, 1-0 CSFL-South) returns to action after a bye week for a Collegiate Sprint Football South Division road game against Caldwell (0-3, 0-0 South) on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. at James Caldwell High School in West Caldwell, N.J. Live stats and live video will be available throughout the game.
 
The Series
Navy holds a 1-0 meeting in the all-time series, winning the first match up between the two teams last season in Caldwell's first season of sprint football. In the final game of the 2017 season, the Midshipmen sent their seniors out in style with an impressive 72-0 victory over the Cougars in Annapolis.
 
Sprint Duo Garners Weekly League Honors
Navy sprint football players Troy Monroe (Columbus, Ga.) and Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) were selected at the Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, following their performances against Mansfield on Sept. 28. as announced by the Collegiate Sprint Football League office.
 
Monroe powered the defensive unit that held Mansfield to just six points in a 55-6 victory on Friday night. He recorded four tackles, including three solo stops. Monroe posted a team-high 3.0 tackles for loss, including a team-best 2.0 sacks. In addition, he forced two fumbles, while also recovering a fumble. Monroe sacked the Mansfield quarterback, forcing a fumble, which he recovered on Mansfield's first drive of the second quarter. The fumble recovery set up a Navy touchdown. On Mansfield's second drive of the second, Monroe sacked the quarterback, forcing a fumble, which Navy recovered in the end zone for a touchdown.
 
Swenson, who picked up his second CSFL honor of the season, scored 17 points in Navy victory over Mansfield. He was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra point attempts, while knocking in a pair of field goals (29, 48). Swenson had eight points at halftime on five PATs and a 29-yard field goal, helping the Midshipmen to a 38-0 advantage at intermission. He tallied five additional points in the second half on a pair of PATs and a career-long 48-yard field goal.
 
Last Time Out – vs. Mansfield (W, 55-6)
Navy tallied nearly 400 yards of total offense and caused six turnovers as the Midshipmen trounced Mansfield, 55-6, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
 
Defensively, Navy held Mansfield to six points on 260 total yards. The Mids recovered four fumbles and intercepted a pair of passes on the night. Eleven different players were credited with tackles for loss, including six Mids who contributed sacks. Troy Monroe (Columbus, Ga.) led the way with 3.0 tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks. The junior forced two fumbles and added a fumble recovery. Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.) led the way with a game-high nine tackles, including a team-high five solo stops. Team captain Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) forced a pair of fumbles while Adam Weissenfels (Richland, Wash.) and Nicholas Molineaux (Wynnewood, Pa.) each recorded interceptions, while Nick Scalise (Fayetteville, Ark.) returned a fumble recovery seven yards to the end zone to give the defense a score.
 
Offensively, Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) paced the offensive attack with 157 rushing yards on 15 carries. He found the end zone three times, including a 70-yard jaunt in the third quarter. Led by Champion, the Mids tallied 328 yards on the ground and 395 total yards. Quarterback Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) finished the game with 99 rushing yards and pair of scores. He completed 6-of-11 passes for 67, hitting four different receivers. J.T. Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) led the receiving corps in receptions (3) and yards (29).
 
The kicking game saw Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) score 13 points on the night. The junior was 7-for-7 in point after attempts, while going 2-for-2 in field goal tries, including converting a career-best 48-yard field goal in the third quarter.
 
The game was all Mids as Navy jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The home team used a pair of rushing touchdowns by Chmiel and Champion to take the early lead. Navy added 24 points in the second quarter on three TDs and a Swenson field goal to go into halftime in front 38-0. Chmiel and Champion each added scores in the quarter for the offense, while Scalise notched a defensive TD with a seven-yard fumble recovery.
 
In the second half, Navy pushed the lead to 48-0 with a 70-yard TD run by Champion and Swenson's career-long 48-yard field goal. Mansfield used a 15-play drive that covered 78 yards to score in the fourth quarter. Navy blocked the PAT to keep the Mountaineers at six points. Kaleb Bodily (Logandale, Nev.) provided the final margin as the sophomore scored his first collegiate touchdown on an 11-yard scamper into the checkerboard end zone.
 
Last Time vs. Caldwell (W, 72-0 – Nov. 3, 2017)
Navy dominated from start to finish in all aspects of the game as the Midshipmen posted a 72-0 victory over College Sprint Football League newcomer Caldwell on Senior Night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
 
Navy was firing on all cylinders in the game.
 
The offense amassed 557 total yards, including 452 yards on the ground. The Midshipmen tallied seven rushing touchdowns on the night by five different players, led by senior captain Mac Lavis (Orinda, Calif.) who finished the game with three TDs rushing. Navy completed just three of five pass attempts, but connected on two touchdowns and tallied 105 yards in the air. Senior Sam Shaunak (Collierville, Tenn.) hauled in both touchdown receptions. The Mids were helped by their defense throughout the first half with great field position. Only four plays in the first half were ran on the Navy side of the field.
 
Defensively, the Midshipmen posted 79 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss with three sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, three interceptions, and a pair of pass breakups. The defense limited the Cougar offense to 75 total yards of offense (46 rushing, 29 passing). Navy held Caldwell to -1 yards of total offense through the first half of play before the Midshipmen began freely substituting in the second half. The Cougars did not run a play on the Mids' side of the field until the fourth quarter.
 
On special teams, Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) was a perfect 8-for-8 on point after attempts, while adding three field goals for a season-high 17 points in the game. In addition, Swenson connected on a season-best 48-yard field goal.
 
Navy jumped out to a 28-0 lead through the first quarter of play. Following an interception by Miles Whitlow (Madison, Ala.) on the Cougars' opening drive, the Midshipmen handed off to Lavis on back-to-back plays and the senior punched it in for his first touchdown of the game. The Mids put together an eight-play, 65-yard drive that was capped by a one-yard Lavis plunge into the end zone to put Navy up 14-0. The Mids got the ball back as senior Patrick McMahan (Windermere, Fla.) picked off a Caldwell pass at the 38-yardline. One play later, Brandon Coleman (Yonkers, N.Y.) hit Shaunak in stride for the TD. The ensuing Cougar drive ended with an errant snap that senior Bryant Schlade (Napoleon, Ohio) jumped on to give the Midshipmen possession. Navy needed four plays to find the checkerboard end zone, capping the drive with a four-yard Coleman scamper.
 
The second quarter was much of the same for the Midshipmen. Navy tallied four more touchdowns before halftime, taking advantage of excellent field position because of strong defensive efforts. Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) and Lavis added rushing scores, while Chmiel found Shaunak for a 30-yard TD strike. Stefano Saragusa (Haines City, Fla.) closed out the scoring in the first half with a 31-yard jaunt into the end zone to put the Midshipmen ahead 28-0 at intermission.
 
Navy slowed things down in the second half, settling for three field goals, while adding one touchdown run. Swenson connected on field goals from 35, 48, and 19 in the game, while Jacob Hudson (Wilmington, Del.) handled a bad snap and scrambled for 30 yards to find the end zone for a score.
 
The sprint football team finished the season 6-2 overall, including a 3-1 record in the CSFL South Division.
