Box Score 3 ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team closed its fall season by having a pair of its doubles teams win flights at the Navy Invitational held this weekend at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Visiting teams competing in the three-day event that concluded Sunday were Columbia, George Washington, Hofstra, James Madison, La Salle, Morgan State, Mount St. Mary's and Saint Joseph's.
"We were fortunate to have so many teams and players participate in the tournament this weekend," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Getting the chance to watch players up close from Columbia, one of the premier programs in the country, play the tournament was also a great experience."
Winning the A Gold doubles flight was the Navy team of
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.). The duo won four matches over the weekend to win the event, with the Mids defeating Columbia's Austen Huang and Jason Lui, 6-4, in the final.
Navy's team of
Jake Fishkin (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) and
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) claimed the B Gold doubles flight. Fishkin and McBride edged fellow Mids
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.), 7-4 in a tiebreaker, in the semifinal round of the draw. The Fishkin / McBride tandem won the flight when Columbia's Ben Gollin and Rian Pandole defaulted their Sunday match.
Mids also advanced to the finals in a pair of singles flights.
Jonathan Dollahite (Fr., Orem, Utah) won his group in the E draw with a 3-0 record. He dropped just one set in those three matches to advance to the final where he fell to Hofstra's Giacomo Pezzoli.
Cameron Kirkpatrick (Sr., Menlo Park, Calif.) would reach the final of the F flight. He too did not drop a match in his group before falling to Dennis Afanasev from George Washington in the final.
"We had a great weekend with winning two doubles events," said Garner. "In singles, Cam and Jonathan had great runs in reaching the final of their flights. Jan and Romseh played some good doubles while also showing great strides in singles play.
"
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) played some very solid tennis from start to finish.
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staen island, N.Y.) was working his way through the draw but came up a little short in his final round robin match.
Andrew Hicks (Sr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) was driving his forehand well throughout the entire tournament to produce a number of wins."
This weekend's tournament closed the fall season for the Mids. Navy's spring campaign will begin Jan. 19 when the Mids play host to both Penn and St. Bonaventure.
"It was a great fall season for the entire team," said Garner. "Everyone had the chance to play in a number of competitive matches. I really liked what I saw from the team. We have a lot that we can keep building upon moving into the spring."
