Gil Crowned Champion, Nine Mids Place at Bearcat Open

VESTAL, N.Y. — Nine of the 20 wrestlers who competed for Navy at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday afternoon placed among the top six in their respective weight classes, including two-time NCAA qualifier and team captain Nicholas Gil, who went 5-0 to capture the title at 141 pounds. An "open" event, there was no team scoring.

"The Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open provided us with a good look at several regional teams and presented some different styles than what we prepared for in the season opener," said fifth-year Navy head coach Joel Sharratt. "It was a solid first tournament for our guys to see where they are at and what they need to fine-tune. Everyone is excited to kick off our home schedule with next week's Navy Classic!"

The Highlights
• Nicholas Gil (Sr, Crystal Lake, Ill.) has now won three tournaments over his career, capturing titles at the Eastern Michigan Open and All-Academy Championship a year ago. He won three of his five matches by way of dec and one by major. Franklin & Marshall's Brett Kulp bowed out of the championship match due to injury in the opening period.
• Freshman Jacob Allen (Poway, Calif.) won his first three matches of the day before falling to Binghamton's Audey Ashkar, 2-1, in the 125-pound finals. Allen has been impressive in the first two weeks of his collegiate career having also recorded a dual win over Ohio State's Brakan Mead a week ago.
• Taking fourth at 133 pounds was sophomore Casey Cobb (Nampa, Idaho), who sat out a year ago due to NCAA rules. Cobb dropped a 5-2 decision to tournament runner-up Vitali Arujau of Cornell in the quarters before battling his way back. Cobb won three straight matches, but was unable to wrestle the third-place match against Wyoming Seminary's Ramazan Attasauov because of the NCAA rule for the number of matches you can wrestle in a day.
• Navy had four wrestlers in action at 157 pounds with two of them placing. Junior Zach Elvin (Harrisburg, Pa.), who wrestled for the Mids as a freshman, returned the mat and put together a strong showing. After losing a 9-1 decision to Cornell's Adam Santoro in the quarters, he bounced back to win three straight, including matches against teammates Jack Stanton-Taddeo (2-0) and Connor Prince (5-1). Elvin and his foe Hunter Ladnier of Harvard both defaulted in the third-place match. Prince (Safety Harbor, Fla.), meanwhile, took sixth at 157 pounds.
• Taking third at 165 pounds was senior Jonathan Carrera (Milton, Mass.), who won his final four matches of the day, including his third-place match against Josh Kim of Harvard who he beat by major decision.
• Navy also wrestled well at 184 pounds where Alex Benoit (Jr, Chicago, Ill.), Anthony Cable (Sr, Hughesville, Md.)and Connor Doyle (Sr, Melissa, Texas) would all place.
• Benoit lost his opening match by tech fall to Franklin & Marshall's Anthony Mancini, but battled back to win five in a row and defeat teammate Anthony Cable for third place. Doyle fell to the backside of the bracket following a loss in the quarters to Mancini, but came back to defeat Lehigh's Eli Grape for fifth place.

Quick Takes from the Coach
• Nicholas Gil's championship performance was again a testament to his role as the leader on the team. He is a hammer every time he steps on the mat and today he did not disappoint.  He is very aggressive in his takedown game and made great match adjustments in setting his attacks up.

• Jacob Allen wrestled very well and continues to have fun while he competes.  He was very solid in his position and his effort was tremendous.  His finals match was a challenge he had not previously experience with a fairly strong and counter offensive opponent.  He has some thing to work on, but with his attitude and effort he will unlock the challenges he faces down the road.

• Casey Cobb wrestled with fire and delivered several gutsy performances in his path to placing today. He is aggressive and well conditioned.  He is gaining valuable experience that will continue to serve him well.

• I was excited to see the competitive fire of Zach Elvin and Connor Prince.  This was Elvin's first time down to 157 and he looked comfortable at the weight, as he delivered our top performance at this weight class.

• Alex Benoit showed strong improvement since he last faced off against fellow teammate Anthony Cable. The depth and parity at several weights is a great issue for a coach, but now I am looking for those guys who can separate themselves from the pack.
