ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The first weekend of the fall season came to an end on Saturday for the Navy men's tennis team.Â
Â
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) opened play at the 32-player Oracle ITA Masters with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to the tournament's top-seeded player, Yuya Ito from Texas. Ito is ranked 29
th nationally to start this season, has competed in the 2017 and 2018 NCAA Tournament in singles and was the MVP of the 2018 Big 12 Conference Tournament.
Â
Ton would move to the consolation bracket where he earned a 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory over Tulsa's Majed Kilani. Â Ton would lose a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Pepperdine's Adrian Oetzbach in the second round of the draw.
Â
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) picked up a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Bradley Luetschwager from IUPUI in the first round of the 64-player singles draw at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. Durham would lose a three-set decision to San Diego's Joel Gamerov in the second round.
Â
Also competing at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic was
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.), who began his season with a straight-set loss to Pat Harper of Tennessee in the main draw. He then fell in straight sets to BYU's Sam Tullis in his first match of the consolation draw.Â
Â
Durham and Lohrbach also took to the courts in doubles this week. The duo would lose an 8-3 decision to the Virginia Tech pairing of Henrik Korsgaard and Alexandre Ribeiro, who are ranked 12
th nationally after ending last spring as the No. 47 team in the country.
Â
"It was a great experience for our guys to once again be invited to the Milwaukee Tennis Classic," said Navy associate head coach
John Moreland who traveled to the event. "Greg had a very good tournament with winning a main draw match and losing a tough three-set match to the event's No. 6 seed. Greg and Peter also gained valuable experience in doubles against a nationally-ranked Virginia Tech team. We look forward to building upon these results as our fall season really gets started this week.
Â
"An additional benefit for coming to this tournament was the opportunity to once again interact with the kids from the Al Hurvis / ADAMM Foundation. It was a great chance to discuss the Naval Academy, education and college tennis with all of them. It is always an honor to part of this tournament."
Â
The full Navy team will be in action this coming weekend when the Mids play host to the Joe Hunt Invitational.
