Sprint Opens Division Play at Home Against Mansfield

Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (1-1, 0-0 CSFL-South) begins Collegiate Sprint Football League – South Division action on Friday, Sept. 28, as the Midshipmen host Mansfield (0-2, 0-2 CSFL-South). Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
 
The Series
Navy holds a 9-0 (1.000) advantage in the all-time series. The Mids are 5-0 against the Mounties all time on the road, and 4-0 in Annapolis. The series began in 2009 with the Midshipmen recording a 49-0 victory. In nine games, Navy has outscored Mansfield, 374-63.
 
CSFL Defensive Player of the Week
The Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) announced its weekly awards and Navy sprint football linebacker Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.) was selected as the CSFL Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Army West Point. Rye led the Navy defense against the Black Knights, boasting a game-high 17 tackles, including a game-best 10 solo stops. He directed the defensive unit that limited the high powered Army offense to just 17 points in the game. In addition, Rye added a tackle for loss, a pass break up, and blocked a field goal attempt on Army's first drive to keep the Black Knights off of the scoreboard.
 
Last Time Out – vs. Army West Point (L, 17-14 – Sept. 21, 2018)
The Army West Point sprint football team converted a 17-yard field goal with under five minutes to play to claim a 17-14 victory over Navy on Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in the annual Star Series presented by USAA. In front of a crowd of 3,349, the two teams matched each other stride for stride until the Black Knights' go-ahead field goal.
 
The Black Knights held a slight 341-304 advantage in total offense, and a 30:29-29:31 edge in time of possession. The defenses for both teams kept the powerful offenses from scoring for most of the night. Each team limited the other to under 100 yards rushing (Army 93, Navy 76) and under 250 yards in the air (Army 248, Navy 225). On special teams, both teams blocked a field goal in the first half to keep the other team off the scoreboard.
 
Dean Rye (Fairfax, Va.) paced the Navy defense with a game-high 17 tackles, including a game-best 10 solo stops. The senior added a pass break up, while also blocking Army's field goal attempt on the opening drive of the game. Rye was joined by Mason Hooten (Orlando, Fla.) who also notched double-digit tackles, finishing the game with 14 stops (5 solo, 9 assisted). The Midshipmen combined for 3.0 tackles for loss with Rye and Hooten combining for 1.5 TFLs. Senior captain Sheppard Wilson, who gained 24 yards on a fake punt, also had a tackle for loss.
 
Offensively, Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.) led the way with 70 yards on the ground, while J.T. Thompson (Stratham, N.H.) finished with 113 receiving yards, including an 81-yard touchdown reception. Quarterback Walt Fagan (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished the game 12-for-26 for 225 yards in the air with a touchdown, an interception and a rushing score.
 
Last Time vs. Mansfield (W, 41-14 – Sept. 23, 2017)
The Navy sprint football team scored 24 points in the fourth quarter to claim a 41-14 victory on the road against Mansfield on Saturday afternoon at Van Norman Field in Mansfield, Pa. The Midshipmen led 17-14 heading into the final quarter, but erupted for their biggest quarter of the year to seal the dominating victory.
 
Offensively, Navy amassed 455 yards of total offense, including 299 yards on the ground. Six players tallied double-digit rushing yards, led by a 103-yard effort by Brandon Coleman (Yonkers, N.Y.). Quarterback Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.) tallied 74 yards rushing on 10 attempts in his first action of the season. Mac Lavis (Orinda, Calif.), Miles Whitlow (Madison, Ala.), and Stefano Saragusa (Haines City, Fla.) each finished the game with a rushing score, rushing for 38, 36, and 20 yards, respectively.
 
In the air, Chmiel and Coleman split time as quarterback. Chmiel finished 6-for-17 with a touchdown, an interception and 88 yards passing, while Coleman was 5-for-11 for 68 yards. Matt Vogel (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) was the leading receiver, hauling in four passes for a team-high 69 yards. Walt Fagan (Rock Hill, S.C.) made his one catch count, pulling in a four-yard TD reception.
 
Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) finished the game with 11 points, connecting on a pair of field goals and five PATs.
 
Defensively, Mason Hooten (Orlando, Fla.) finished the game with a team-high six tackles (4 solo, 2 assisted), including a sack and a pair of interceptions. Sheppard Wilson (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded two pass break ups and an interception that he returned 19 yards for a touchdown.
