ANNAPOLIS, Md. — For the second time in the last three years,
Jack Lentz (Jr / Philadelphia, Pa.) and team captain
Michael Kacergis (Sr / Malvern, Pa.) squared off in the finals of the annual Barb Tournament. With each having previously won the tournament, Kacergis in 2017 (vs. Lentz) and Lentz in 2018 (vs.
Owen Davis), it was Lentz who would prevail in three games (11-4, 11-8, 11-9).
Lentz and Kacergis have been fierce competitors on the court for the last three seasons, but earlier this season the pair joined forces to win the Intercollegiate Squash Doubles National Championship.
"It's tough to play Mike because we play against one another each day in practice," said Lentz, who owns a 38-15 career record, including a 14-5 mark at No. 1 on the ladder a year ago. "He knows my game really well and he's a tremendous player in his own right. I had to really focus on my own game and not worry about any wrinkles or distractions."
Established in 1957 by the late Admiral Eugene Fluckey, a Medal of Honor recipient, the Barb has seen 41 different midshipmen win the coveted trophy. Fifteen men have claimed ownership of the trophy multiple times with five players (Spencer Wall 84-86, Jamie Slough 92-94,
Andy McCann 00-02, Tucker George 05-08, Andrew McGuinness 12, 14-15) winning it three times. Lentz, who will have the opportunity to join the list of three-time winners next year as a senior, will receive a ships clock at the Prizes and Awards ceremony during Commissioning Week and his name will be engraved on the Barb Trophy.
"Each year we have gone out to Hospital Point to Admiral Fluckey's grave and paid our respects," said Lentz. "It's important for us to recognize those men who came before us and who have laid a foundation for us to flourish as students, athletes and service members."
The week-long Barb Tournament pits the Navy squash players against one another in a round robin competition which then sets up an elimination tournament. The tournament results determine Navy's starting lineup to begin the season which is slated to officially kick off next Saturday in Toronto, Ontario, where the Mids will face Western Ontario. The Mids will get a final tuneup for their opener this Saturday when they welcome back former players for the annual Bowen Cup alumni match (8:30 am at Halsey International Squash Courts).
