Mids Finish 16th at CSA Team Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Navy squash team (13-7) closed play in the Hoehn Division at the 2019 College Squash Assocation Team Championship with an 8-1 loss to 10th-seeded Western Ontario on Sunday morning. The 12th-seeded Mids finished the tournament in 16th.

"A tough day for our team," said first-year Navy head coach Tyler Osborne. "It's certainly not how we wanted to close out the season, but it shows how tough this league is and if you aren't at your best every single day, you're going to get beat. It's definitely a learning experience for our team."

After two extremely hard-fought matches on Friday and Saturday against Drexel (L, 5-4) and Franklin & Marshall (L, 6-3), the Mids struggled to get on track in Sunday's finale. Freshman Ben Korn (Stevenson, Md.) earned Navy's lone win of the day with a 3-2 victory over William Kuhn. After finding himself down 2-1, Korn bulled his way to a 13-11 victory in the fourth to force a fifth game. The talented rookie went on to take the match with an 11-9 win in the fifth and close out the weekend with a 2-1 mark in what was his first appearance at the CSA Team Championship.

"Ben had another gritty performance today and capped off a terrific freshman year with a win," said Osborne. "We certainly hope to build upon this in future years.

Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.) nearly made it a sweep for the weekend, but came up short in a five-game match against Matthew Henderson, 11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-4.

Lentz, Korn and team captain Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) finished the weekend with 2-1 records, while also posting 14-5 season marks. Both Lentz and Ubina are likely to compete at the CSA Individual Championship at Brown March 1-3.

Senior Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) finished the year with an 11-9 record, while posting a 69-29 mark over his career. His 69 wins are tied as the 12th most in program history. Meanwhile, fellow senior Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) finishes with the 18th-most wins in Navy history with a 65-33 mark. He finished his senior year with a 10-9 record.
