ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team highlighted its three-regatta weekend with a second-place finish at the John Jackson Team Race. The Midshipmen also placed fourth at the Charleston Spring Coed Regatta and eighth at the Navy Spring Women's Regatta.
Â
The John Jackson Team Race was the second event in the MAISA Team Race League and it was the first event that featured out of conference teams. Light winds shortened the event to only one complete round robin and a top-six round, but Navy had a strong event going 8-4 for the regatta to place second overall in the eight-team field. The Midshipmen finished behind only host Georgetown. Navy's team consisted of skippers
Parker Loftus,
Max Brill,
Connor Bayless and
JC Hermus with crews including
Ana Mier,
Emma Remis and
Sally Johnson.
Â
The first home event of the spring season featured Navy hosting the Navy Spring Women's Regatta. The fleet included some of the top women's teams from around the country. Despite light winds for most of the weekend, the regatta was able to finish 11 races in each division. The Midshipmen sailed well and were standing in fifth place at the end of the day, but following a protest on Sunday, a disqualification bumped Navy to eighth overall.
Olivia de Olazarra and
Kimmie Leonard placed ninth in the A division, while
Brittney Slook and
Kelly Milliken finished second in the B division.
Â
Navy also sent four members to Charleston, S.C, to start the team training trip early and competed at the Charleston Spring Coed Regatta. The event featured 18 teams from around the country and the conditions were nearly perfect for sailing with temperatures in the mid-70s, to go along with moderate winds. The current on the Cooper River was strong, but the Midshipmen handled it well and finished fourth in the field.
Nicholas Gartner and
Fiona Lobon came in fifth place in the A division and
Gray Benson and
Madeline Pruzan were fourth in the B Division.
Â
Following the racing this weekend, the rest of the team will travel to Charleston, S.C., for its Spring Break training before returning to Maryland for three events this coming weekend.Â
