PITTSBURGH, Pa. — All five of Navy's qualifiers -
Nicholas Gil (Sr / 141 / Crystal Lake, Ill.),
Jared Prince (Jr / 149 / Safety Harbor, Fla.),
Tanner Skidgel (So / 165 / Tulsa, Okla.),
Spencer Carey (Jr / 174 / Ringwood, N.J.) and
Joshua Roetman (Jr / 197 / Kotzebue, Alaska) made it through Thursday's opening day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Championship and will continue their quest to become All-Americans when action resumes on Friday at 11:00 am at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Junior 174-pound
Spencer Carey earned an opening-round victory over 13th-seeded Brit Wilson of Northern Illinois, 10-5, but dropped a 12-3 major decision to fourth-seeded Myles Amine of Michigan on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the other four qualifiers dropped their first-round matches but battled back to capture wins in the first round of wrestlebacks to stay alive in the tournament.
All five wrestlers went 1-1 on the day, while Skidgel, Carey and Roetman all captured their first NCAA Championship victories.
Navy is tied with North Dakota State and Rider for 33rd among the field of 70 potential scorers with 5.0 points. The Mids are just one point out of the top 30. Penn State, meanwhile, is atop the leader board with 32.5 points and all nine of its wrestlers still in action including nine in the championship bracket. The Nittany Lions hold a seven-point advantage over Ohio State (25.5), who has 10 wrestlers still in the tournament. Iowa is in third with 24.0 points, followed by Minnesota and Oklahoma State who are tied for fourth (20.0).
