Miller and Piedt Headline League Swimming & Diving Academic Teams

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –– Navy's Jamie Miller (Jr., Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Zach Piedt (Sr., Fort Mill, S.C.) were announced Tuesday as this year's Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year for swimming and diving.  They were two of the seven Mids who earned placement onto the Patriot League All-Academic Teams for the sport.

Nominees for the awards needed to be at least a sophomore in the classroom with a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 and also be a key contributor to the team.

Miller earned the scholar-athlete award for the first time in her career after being named to the all-academic team a year ago.  The honors operations research major has compiled a 3.93 GPA and received first-team all-league honors this season for the second year in a row.  She swept the backstroke events at the 2019 Patriot League Championship.  Miller broke her own Navy record in winning the 100 back at the meet (54.07) and bettered her own school and meet record during the trial heats of the 200 back (1:56.57).  She also placed sixth in the 200 individual medley and swam on Navy's winning 400 medley relay team.

Piedt garnered the scholar-athlete accolade for the second-straight season.  He earned his second first-team all-league nod in as many years this season after placing second in the 100 fly and 100 free and third in the 50 free at this year's championship.  Piedt, who previously received second-team all-league honors as a freshman and sophomore, is a computer science major who has posted a 3.97 GPA at Navy and is ranked 24th in the class of 2019.

Stephanie Downing (Jr., Pasadena, Md.) joined Miller on the 10-member women's all-academic team.  She has posted a 3.67 GPA at Navy as a chemistry major.  Downing placed third in the 1650 free, fourth in the 400 individual medley and fifth in the 500 free at the recent league meet.

Piedt was joined by four additional Navy men's swimmers on the league's all-academic team.

Making his third appearance on the team was Michael Velazquez (Sr., Henderson, Nev.).  The physics major with a 3.53 GPA earned first-team all-league honors this season after receiving second-team accolades as a sophomore and junior.  He placed fifth in both breaststroke events and in the 200 individual medley and swam on Navy's winning 800 freestyle relay team at the league meet.

The trio of Daniel Cook (So., Virginia Beach, Va.), Luke Johnson (So., Charlotte, N.C.) and Micah Oh (So., Kent, Wash.) were named to the all-academic team for the first time in their respective careers.

Cook, who carries a 3.88 GPA as a quantitative economics major, received first-team all-league honors at this year's league meet.  He placed third in the 200 free, tied for fourth pace in the 100 free and finished in seventh place in the 50 free at the championship.

Johnson won the 1650 freestyle at this year's league meet in a time that missed the Navy, league and meet record by less than one-quarter of a second.  He also placed second in the 500 free and fifth in the 400 individual medley to earn first-team all-league honors.  The chemistry major has tallied a 3.93 GPA.

Oh made his Patriot League Championship debut a memorable one as he won the title in the 200 butterfly, placed third in the 400 IM and finished in seventh place in the 200 IM to garner first-team all-league accolades.  He has compiled a 4.00 GPA and is majoring in mathematics.
