Coleman & Roach Earn Patriot League Postseason Honors

Coleman selected to All-PL Third & All-Rookie Teams; Roach All-Defensive Team

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Patriot League announced on Friday that the Navy women's basketball duo of Jennifer Coleman (Richmond, Va.) and Bianca Roach (Virginia Beach, Va.) were recipients of three postseason league honors. Coleman, the team's freshman point guard, was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team, as well as the league's All-Rookie team, while Roach earned one of six spots on the Patriot League All-Defensive Team.

A starter for the Mids since Opening Night, Coleman has been a top-level performer throughout the season without an inkling of a slump as she recorded double-digit scoring outputs 19 times, including 13 of 18 Patriot League contests. Finishing with a regular season scoring average of 13.3 points per game, Coleman led Navy in scoring 16 times in 2018-19. A three-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week, she was the league's fifth highest scorer. A strong multi-dimensional player, Coleman also ranked sixth in the league in rebounds with 8.3 caroms per game and 11th in the conference with 2.9 assists per game. On 17 occasions she led the Mids in rebounds, while pacing the team in assists in 18 of 28 games. Navy's leader in playing time with an average of 29.7 minutes, Coleman was also an asset on defense with 1.8 steals per game. All-time in Navy's single-season record books, the Richmond native is fourth in total points by a freshman (371) and three out of third place (374-Becky Dowling '94-95), while also standing one rebound out of the top-10 for most defensive rebounds across all classes with 161 on the season. Closely packed in positions six through 10, Coleman could potentially push her way into the top-six with nine boards on Saturday at Loyola.

Amongst freshmen in the Patriot League, Coleman ranked highest in the conference in terms of overall scoring, rebounding, assists and steals per game. That dominance over her fellow league rookies carried over into the league-only standings where her 13.4 points per game, 9.1 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game and 1.7 steals per game were tops for the Class of 2022.

Roach, the Mids' team captain for the 2018-19 campaign, continued her role as the team's top defender. On Friday, that culminated with a spot on the Patriot League All-Defensive Team. Matched up against most team's top offensive threat, Roach has netted herself a strong defensive statline this season with 55 steals over 28 games (1.96 spg) and 37 in 18 league matchups. All-time in 122 career games, she has accumulated 159 steals. Roach is just one theft outside of the top-10 all-time at Navy as Courtney Davidson (Class of '04) and Maile Shimoda ('04) completed their respective careers with 160 steals to tie for 10th-place all-time.

The league's head coaches, who could not select their own student-athletes, voted on the awards.

Navy will begin Patriot League postseason action on Saturday with a first round matchup at Loyola. Tip-off between the ninth-seeded Mids and eighth-seeded Greyhounds is set for 2 p.m. at Reitz Arena in Baltimore.
