Cook Named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year

For the second consecutive year, Jamie Cook was selected as Men’s Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the 2019 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field season on Friday afternoon, and Navy Director of Track and Field Jamie Cook was selected as Men's Coach of the Year for the Mid-Atlantic Region. It is the second consecutive year that Cook has earned the honor.

Cook led the men's track and field team to a Patriot League record 289 points to win the 2019 PL Outdoor Championship, winning 15 of 22 events at the meet. Navy claimed 12 individual titles and three relays, while also claiming silver in five additional events. For his efforts, he was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

In addition, Cook earned a Star by beating Army West Point in the annual outdoor dual meet as part of the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA.

He directed the men's track and field team to back-to-back IC4A Championships (2018, '19), claiming the title in consecutive years for the first time since winning it three-straight times from 1944-46. At the Penn Relays, Navy won the shuttle hurdles relay, marking first win in 73 years at the meet.

Under Cook, Navy had 13 student-athletes represent the Academy at the 2019 NCAA East Preliminaries in 11 individual events and one relay. He had NCAA Qualifiers in the 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 800m run, 3,000m steeplechase, 4x400m relay, shot put, discus, hammer, javelin, pole vault, and triple jump.

The 4x400m relay team of Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.), Simon Petsch (Billings, Mont.), Cameron Hurd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), and John Finnegan (Spring, Texas) combined for a school-record time of 3:07.24 to finish 11th overall at the regionals to qualify for nationals. The relay team heads to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas along with freshman Hayden Fox (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who qualified in the javelin with a distance of 67.35m (220-11).
