ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After a four-week break in between competitions, No. 10 Navy (2-1, 1-1 GARC) dropped its first match of the season to No. 5 Akron (2-1, 1-1 GARC) in a 4,662-4,641 contest on Saturday at the
Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.

Junior
Michael Zanti (Norfolk, Va.) continued his strong start to the season with an aggregate score of 1,179 points, which led all shooters and was the second-highest total of his career. Zanti tied his career-high in smallbore with a 584 and was a point off his air rifle career-high with a 595.

In smallbore, the Midshipmen only totaled 2,285 points as a team and trailed the Zips by 32 points after the first half of the match. Following a 584 from Zanti to tie the best mark in the competition,
Torrance Kang (Sr., Columbia, Md.) produced Navy's second-highest counting score with a 571. Navy's final two scores for its team total came from
Gabriella Mayes (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) and
Mark Amdahl (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) with a 567 and a 563, respectively. As a non-starter,
Brianna Feerick (Jr., Pembroke, Mass.) fired a season-high 573 in the event and she just missed her personal-best by two points.

Navy's strength in air rifle showed in the second half of the match as it outscored Akron, but it was not enough as the Zips went on to win the match. The Midshipmen racked up 2,356 points in the discipline for its second-best output of the season, while Akron totaled 2,345 points in air rifle.

Zanti's event-high 595 in air rifle paced the Midshipmen with Amdahl firing a 588 and just missed his third-straight match with at least 590 points in air rifle. Kang was just a point back of Amdahl with a 587 and Navy's final counting score was produced by Mayes with a 586.
Luke Knollinger (Sr., Valley Grove, W. Va.) notched a season-high of 585 points and was three points off his career-high.

Andre Gross guided Akron with an aggregate score of 1,170 points and he tied Zanti in smallbore with a 584. Jeanne Haverhill led the Zips in air rifle with a 590 on Saturday afternoon.

The Midshipmen continue their fall slate on Friday, November 6 as they travel to West Point, N.Y. for the President's Trophy Match against Air Force, Army and Coast Guard.
