ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In its final fall competition of the season, Navy's offshore sailing team posted a second-place finish at the J/105 Chesapeake Bay Championship this past weekend in Annapolis.
Â
The competition began on Saturday but only one race was completed in the morning as the wind became erratic and unsuitable for further racing in the afternoon. Following the first race, the Midshipmen's three boats finished fourth, sixth and 15th in the 20-boat fleet.
Â
On Sunday, three more races were completed in a chilly, soggy southwesterly breeze to conclude the championship.
Katie Boyle and her crew on Constellation did not let the conditions deter them as they posted a second-place and a first-place finish in the first two races of the day. Navy's Constellation crew was just two points out of the lead going into the final race. However, the Midshipmen found themselves on the wrong side of a wind shift and had to fight hard to get back in contention in the last race and the fight led them to finish eighth in the race en route to a second-place finish in the regatta.
Â
Boyle's crew included
Matt Gillcrist on bow,
Brett Eckert on main trim,
Nicholas Walden on spinnaker trim,
Teagan Foley on jib trim and
Madelyn Ploch on helm.
Â
Paul Jervis skippered Dreadnought to a ninth-place finish and
Don Poirier led Avenger to an 11th-place finish.
Â
Navy has wrapped up its fall schedule and will return to action during the spring semester.
