WEST POINT, N.Y. – No. 14 Navy (3-3) finished third overall during the President's Trophy Match on Friday with a total of 5,812 points and the Midshipmen also posted an NCAA four-count score of 4,645 in their first road event of the season.
Scoring for the overall President's Trophy Match features eight starters at most for each team in smallbore and air rifle with the top five scores counting toward each team's final score. The NCAA scoring of starting five shooters in each event with the top four scores counting will still be used for NCAA qualification purposes.
Michael Zanti (Jr., Norfolk, Va.) once again paced Navy with a total score of 1,167 points, which ranked tied for fifth overall in the field among the four teams. Zanti fired a 573 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle with his air rifle scoring being tied for the best in the field.
In smallbore,
Luke Knollinger (Sr., Valley Grove, W. Va.) led the Midshipmen with a 575 to pace the team to a 2,864 in President's Trophy scoring. Zanti followed with his 573 and
Brianna Feerick (Jr., Pembroke, Mass.) also fired a 573, which tied her season-high.
Gabriella Mayes (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) notched a 572 and
Mark Amdahl (Jr., Albuquerque, N.M.) rounded out Navy's scoring in the discipline with a 571. The Midshipmen recorded an NCAA score of 2,289 in smallbore with the scores from Zanti, Feerick, Mayes and Amdahl making up their four-count score.
Navy's five-count air rifle score of 2,948 points was the best among the four teams with Zanti's 594 leading the way. Amdahl joined Zanti in the 590s with a 592, which ranked third in the field. Feerick had her best collegiate performance on Friday as her 588 in air rifle set a new personal best and her aggregate mark of 1,161 tied her career-high. The pair of
Laurel Kuhne (Jr., Everett, Pa.) and
Clarissa Layland (Fr., Granbury, Texas) each set new career-bests in air rifle with matching 587s to round out the Midshipmen's score for the President's Trophy. In NCAA scoring, Navy finished with a total of 2,356 points in air rifle as the 594 and 592 from Zanti and Amdahl were joined by a 586 from
Torrance Kang (Sr., Columbia, Md.) and a 584 from Mayes.
Air Force won its seventh-straight President's Trophy Match after edging Army by a point. The two teams both had five-count scores of 2,946 in air rifle while the Falcons notched a 2,903 in smallbore to finish with a 5,849. The Black Knights scored 2,902 points in smallbore to post a total score of 5,848 points. Air Force's Peter Fiori had the top overall score in the field with 1,183 points and Army's Clayton Hanson finished second with 1,178 points. Army had the highest four-count score in the event with a 4,686, followed by Air Force's 4,682. Coast Guard rounded out the competition with a five-count score of 5,708 and an NCAA total of 4,599.
