ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team ran its winning streak to five matches in a row with a pair of victories Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. The Mids (7-3) posted a 6-1 win over Georgetown (2-3) and won a 5-2 decision over Fairleigh Dickinson (0-3).
"The team put together two solid wins today," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "Everyone had the chance to contribute to the wins."
Navy's day began with the victory over Georgetown. The Mids claimed each of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
Christian Pumpelly (Fr., Atlanta, Ga.) and
Gavin Segraves (Fr., Charlottesville, Va.) first won a 6-4 decision at the No. 3 flight, then Navy's No. 1 tandem of
Derrick Thompson (So., Towson, Md.) and
Andrew Ton (Jr.., Milpitas, Calif.) won its match by an identical score.
"Pumpelly and Segraves stepped up late in their set to help get the doubles point," said Garner.
Navy's five singles wins all came in straight sets. Thompson was the first to finish at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Pumpelly soon followed at the No. 6 flight, 6-2, 6-4, and Segraves won the match-clinching point at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
"All five of our singles wins were very solid from start to finish," said Garner.
A new lineup took to the courts for Navy's late afternoon match against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Mids narrowly won the doubles point from the Knights. FDU began play by winning at No. 1 doubles by the score of 6-4, then Navy won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles by the identical score of 7-5. The team of
Romesh Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Jan Kjellberg (So., White Plains, N.Y.) won at the No. 2 flight and winning at the No. 3 flight was the tandem of Andres Ballersteros (Fr., West Hartford, Conn.) and
Matthew Lee (Sr., San Diego, Calif.).
"Ballesteros and Lee came up with some clutch shots to secure the doubles point," said Garner.
Lee would win his No. 6 singles match by the score of 6-4, 6-0, to increase the lead out to 2-0.
Conners O'Brien (So., Rensselaer, N.Y.) made the score 3-0 thanks to his 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win at the No. 5 flight. Kahatapitiya secured the overall victory when he posted a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) victory at No. 4 singles.
"Lee, O'Brien and Kahatapitiya led the way in singles to get us to four points," said Garner.
Navy's season will continue Sunday, Feb. 16, when the Mids play host to Monmouth and Richmond.
