Sunday Salute: Offshore Sailing

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Following the unforeseen conclusion to the 2019-20 seasons, our Sunday Salute series rolls on with Navy offshore sailing, who had its final two events of the spring season canceled due to coronavirus.

In the 2019-20 season, the Midshipmen finished the year with five regatta victories. Of the five wins, one was the 10-team field for the Shields Trophy where Navy outlasted nine other service and maritime academies to win the event in Annapolis.

Don Poirier skippered Navy to the win at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta and Jonathan Hitt guided the Midshipmen to the title at the US Offshore Championship, which was Navy's first win at the event since 2005.

The Midshipmen also captured the oldest trophy in collegiate sailing after winning the McMillian Cup and Navy also picked up a victory at the Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta.

During the summer just before the 2019-20 season, Sean Caraher led Navy's crew on Zaraffa to the win at the Marblehead to Halifax Race and Matthew McClelland skippered Navy's crew on Wahoo to second place in the ORR-2 class at the race.
