ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy Director of Track and Field
Jamie Cook announced that rising seniors
Skyler Mason (Oakdale, Pa.) and Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) will be team captains for the 2021 outdoor season.
"The love and respect I have for my teammates and coaching staff, leaves me feeling honored to be named a captain," said Mason. "I am excited to fill in the footsteps of those incredible captains and leaders who have come before me and I can't wait for the upcoming season. Regardless of the season and the challenges we have ahead of us, we are all ready to get back and get to work."
"I am honored and humbled to have been selected as captain of the track team for this upcoming season," Orie stated. "I look forward to working with Chelsey and the men's team captains to lead this team through whatever this next year brings. Last season got cut short and I know this team has worked hard in the time off. I am excited to see what we can do this year and look forward to competing with the team again."
Mason is an All-Patriot League performer in the javelin. The two-time NCAA Regional qualifier (2018, '19) is also a two-time IC4A All-East athlete (2018, '19). In his last full season of competition, Mason posted a season-long throw of 67.09m (220-01) at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, barely missing all-conference recognition with a third-place finish. He recorded his second-best throw of 2019 at the NCAA East Regional, registering an official distance of 65.64m (215-04) to finish 16th (top 12 advance to NCAA Championship). As a freshman, Mason earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors in the javelin, while advancing to the NCAA East Regionals.
Orie is a three-time All-Patriot League thrower, earning all-conference distinction in the weight throw (indoor) and shot put (indoor and outdoor). She is a three-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree, earning the accolade during the 2019 and 2020 indoor seasons as well as the 2019 outdoor season. This season, Orie was tabbed First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District for her efforts in the classroom. Orie holds four on Navy's top 10 distances in the indoor shot put, five top 10 marks in the outdoor shot put, while claiming a pair of top 10 performances in the weight throw.
