Women’s Golf Plays to Third-Place Finish at Navy Fall Invitational

The Midshipmen posted an overall score of 609, tied for the fourth-best score for a 36-hole tournament in program history to secure a third-place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Angelina Chan (Jr., Franklin, Tenn.) posted a 6-over par 150, finishing tied for seventh to lead the Navy women's golf team to a third-place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational, hosted at the USNA Golf Club over the weekend.
 
After sitting in fifth place after the first day of competition with a 24-over par 312, Navy rallied with a 9-over par 297 to move up two spots and earn a third-place overall finish.
 
The Midshipmen's overall score of 609 tied the fourth-best 36-hole tournament score in program history. Along with its overall score making its way into the record book, the Mids' second-round 297 stands as the fourth-lowest single round in team history.
 
The overall score of 609 also ranks as the lowest-score at the Naval Academy Golf Club since its renovation that was completed prior to the 2020 season.
 
"We've has two very filled weeks of golf and academic reserve" said head coach Nadia Ste-Marie. "I am so proud of how our team dug deep today to shoot our best team score at Navy."  
 
Over the two-day, 36-hole tournament, the Midshipmen had three players finish in the top-15 including Chan, Stephanie Lee (So., Southlake, Texas) and Eve Worden (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz.).
 
Chan began the weekend by shooting a 2-over par 74 in round one, the fourth-lowest score of her career, followed by posting a 4-over par 76 on Sunday to finish with an overall 6-over par 150 and in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings.
 
After recording an 8-over par 80 on Saturday, Lee rebounded in a big way by rising seven spots to with a 2-over par 74 in round two, finishing with an overall 10-over par 154 and tied for 15th in the individual standings. The sophomore's second-round 74 ranked was just one shot off the best score of her career for a single round.
 
Worden, who also finished with an overall 10-over par 154, shot a 4-over par 76 on Friday followed by a 6-over par 78 on Sunday. The junior's first-round 76 finished just three shots off her low round of the 2021 fall season (73).
 
Mara Hirtle (So., Pinehurst, N.C.), the reigning Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Week, rose 24 spots in Sunday's second round after posting an even-par 72, tying her lowest round of her career after posting an 11-over par 83 on Saturday. The sophomore finished tied for 19th in the individual standings after ranking as low as 43rd in the standings.
 
Tori Smith (Sr., Arlington, Tenn.) was also a fast riser on Sunday, moving up 12 spots on the final day of the invitational with a 3-over par 75 after posting a 10-over par 82 in round one. The senior totaled a 13-over par 157 to finish tied for 23rd in the individual ranks.
 
Competing as individuals, the trio of Bridget Hoang (Fr., Lawrenceville, Ga.), Jenna Han (Fr., Mahwah, N.J.) and Hannah Han-Kim (Fr., Potomac, Md.) finished tied for 23rd, 26th and 43rd, respectively.
 
Hoang finished with a 13-over par 157, highlighted by a 6-over par 78 on Saturday followed by a 7-over par 79 on Sunday in her first action since posting a career-low round even-par 72 at the William & Mary Invitational.
 
Han finished just a stroke behind Hoang at 14-over 158 after rebounding with a 6-over par 78 on Sunday after posting an 8-over par 80 in round one. The second-round 78 by the freshman tied her best round of the 2021 fall slate.
 
Rounding out the individual performers for Navy was Han-Kim who recorded a 19-over par 163 with a 10-over par 82 in round one followed by a 9-over par 81 on Sunday.

Navy is set to return to action October 16-17 as it travels to take part in the Delaware Invitational.
