Navy wrestling is set to kick off the 2021-22 season on Sunday when 15 Midshipmen make the trip to Pennsylvania to compete at the Clarion Open. The tournament will be held at Clarion's Tippin Gym and is slated to begin at 9:00 am. Navy Notebook
• Cary Kolat begins his second season as the Mids' head coach after directing the team to a 5-1 dual record a year ago that included wins over rivals Army (20-13) and Lehigh (21-9). Additionally, the Mids placed second at the EIWA Championship, crowning a champion (141 Cody Trybus) and placing seven among the top three in their respective weight classes (1-1st / 4-2nd / 2-3rd).
• Navy sent nine wrestlers to the 2021 NCAA Championship in St. Louis with eight of the nine making their first appearance at the national tournament.
• Navy returns just four of its nine NCAA qualifiers off last year's squad - senior Jacob Allen, who will drop down from 133 to 125 pounds this winter, sophomore Andrew Cerniglia (157), sophomore David Key (184) and junior Jacob Koser (197). Logan Treaster (125), Cody Trybus (141), Casey Cobb (149) and Tanner Skidgel (165) graduated in May, while heavyweight John Birchmeier stepped away from wrestling.
• All four of Navy's returning NCAA qualifiers will begin the 2021-22 campaign ranked among Intermat's top 25, including 184-pound David Key who is ranked the highest among the Mids at #19. Jacob Koser (197) is #21, Jacob Allen (125) is #23 and Andrew Cerniglia (157) is #24.
• Navy was ranked 17th in the final 2020-21 NWCA Coaches Poll. While the Mids are not ranked in the opening poll of 2021-22, they did receive a substantial number of votes.
• Navy will wrestle in just four home events this season. After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Mids will once again play host to the annual Navy Classic on Nov. 20. They will not wrestle at home again until February when they play host to their final three duals of the season against Bucknell (Feb. 4), Clarion (Feb. 6) and Army (Feb. 18).
• David Key (184) was named a Second-Team Preseason All-EIWA selection by Intermat behind Binghamton's Lou Deprez, a 20021 All-American and two-time EIWA Champion.
