ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Men's swimmer
Caleb Mauldin (Sr., Chesapeake, Va.) and women's diver
Hannah Montau (Sr., Germantown, Md.) shared this week's Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete-of-the-Week laurel, presented by Northrop Grumman, with Diego Fagot from the football team.
The three Mids earned the accolade for helping their respective teams beat Army last week.
Maudlin opened what would prove to be Navy's 158-142 victory over the Black Knights –– the team's 31st-straight victory in the series –– by swimming the opening backstroke leg on the winning 200 medley relay team. His effort of 21.44 was the fastest in the field by 1.4 seconds. The Mids would win the relay in a time of 1:25.02, which provided them with a 2.7-second margin of victory. The foursome also broke the meet record of 1:26.53 and the Lejeune Hall, Navy and Patriot League record of 1:25.58.
Mauldin broke more records in winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 45.82. That effort gave him the victory by 3.11 seconds, bettered the meet record of 46.78 and broke his own pool, school and league record of 46.16. His time also ranks 10th in the country this season, was well under the 2022 NCAA B cut time of 47.77 and was below the time of 46.73 that received an invitation to the 2021 NCAA Championship.
He would go on to sweep the backstroke events during the meet as his time of 1:43.70 gave him the victory in the 200 back by 1.74 seconds. Maudlin closed the meet by swimming the fastest leg of any swimmer in the 400 freestyle relay. He posted a time of 42.40 on the anchor leg, which made him the fastest swimmer in the field by 1.43 seconds.
Montau broke multiple records in sweeping the diving events during Navy's 230-70 victory over Army. The women's team has now defeated Army in 33-straight seasons.
She first posted a score of 329.10 to win the three-meter board by 36 points. That tally broke the meet record of 322.50 and the Patriot League and Navy record of 326.85 that was set 12 years ago by Katie Griffin.
Montau then posted a score of 304.70 points to win the one-meter event by 37 points. Her total also broke the meet record of 287.48 (set 14 years ago), the league record of 303.40 (set 10 years ago) and the Navy record of 296.70 set by Stacia Johnson 30 seasons ago.
