Defending 141-pound EIWA Champion
Cody Trybus (Elkton, Md.) is one of six Navy wrestlers to earn one of the top-two preseeds at their respective weight class for the 2021 EIWA Championship slated for Friday at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa. The EIWA released the preliminary seeds, selected by a vote of the league coaches, on Monday afternoon.
Trybus, who stands 9-0 this season and 6-0 in dual action, is the only Navy wrestler to earn a No. 1 preseed. He put together a 4-0 mark a year ago at the conference championship, upsetting third-seeded Matt Kazimir of Columbia 3-1 to earn his first EIWA Championship title.
Meanwhile, Navy has five wrestlers who were awarded No. 2 seeds - 125-pound
Logan Treaster (Sr / Newton, Kan.), 149-pound
Casey Cobb (Sr / Kuna, Idaho), 165-pound
Tanner Skidgel (Tulsa, Okla.), 184-pound
David Key (Fr / Norcross, Ga.) and heavyweight
John Birchmeier (So / Ashburn, Va.). Skidgel enters the tournament as the two-time defending EIWA Champion, defeating Bucknell's Zach Hartman 4-2 in last year's title match. Hartman, who is undefeated at 6-0, was given the No. 1 preseed largely due to his No. 7 ranking in the NCAA Coaches Panel Rankings released Feb. 11. Skidgel, meanwhile, owns a No. 14 Coaches Panel Ranking and is 9-1 this season.
Rounding out the preseeds for the Midshipmen are 197-pound
Jacob Koser (So / Dillsburg, Pa.) at No. 3, 157-pound
Andrew Cerniglia (Fr / Nazareth, Pa.) at No. 4, 133-pound
Jacob Allen (Jr / Poway, Calif.) at No. 7 and 174-pound
Dean Caravela (Sr / West Caldwell, N.J.) at No. 8.
Replacement wrestlers are permitted until weigh-ins and the coaches will confer again on Thursday evening to consider any COVID-related replacements for seeding purposes. The seeds will remain preliminary until they are locked in at weigh-ins on Friday morning.
The 117th EIWA Championship will kick off on Friday at 10:00 am with the pigtail, quarterfinal and pigtail consolation rounds, followed by semifinal, consolation quarterfinal and consolation semifinals set to begin at 2:00 pm. The placement round, including championship bouts at each weight class, are due to start at 5:30 pm. Flowrestling (subscription) will stream the 10-team, one-day tournament, while bout results will be available via Flosports Arena. Spectators are not permitted at this year's championship.
