Navy Intercollegiate Sailing to Host ICSA Doublehanded National Championships

Navy and local Annapolis yacht clubs will host three collegiate sailing national championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing program has been selected to host the three ICSA Doublehanded National Championships in Annapolis that will span from mid-May to early June. The College Sailing Women's National Championship starts three championships in Annapolis on May 19-20, followed by the LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship on June 2-3 and the Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship concludes the spring season on June 7-8.

Along with Navy hosting the three events, local Annapolis yacht clubs including Annapolis Yacht Club, Severn Sailing Association, Eastport Yacht Club and Annapolis Sailing School will assist and help support all three championships.

"We are really excited to be hosting the 2021 College Sailing Nationals in Annapolis," said head coach Ian Burman. "After missing out on last year's championships and most of the season this year, we are thrilled to be able to provide competition for all of these student-athletes. I am really grateful to the Naval Academy and to our local sailing clubs in Annapolis for supporting these events."

Each of the three championships in Annapolis will congregate only on the water as the fleet will launch from the different yacht clubs throughout the Annapolis Harbor.

During the 2019 doublehanded championships in Newport, R.I., the Midshipmen placed 10th overall in the women's championship, while placing sixth at the team race nationals. Navy rounded out the last spring championship season with a third-place finish at the 2019 Gill College Sailing Coed National Championship. Along with the third-place finish, the Midshipmen also won the Robert H. Allan, Jr. Trophy in 2019 after finishing with the lowest point total in the B Division.

The collegiate sailing championship season will also include the ICSA LaserPerformance Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships on May 1-2. The singlehanded events – which are typically held in the fall – will take place in Newport, R.I., at Sail Newport.
