ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A pair of Navy student-athletes garnered Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday as part of the organization's track and field/cross country sports category.
Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.) and Thomas Johnstone (Los Gatos, Calif.) received first-team accolades, marking the first time in program history that the Midshipmen boasted two First Team Academic All-Americans for track and field/cross country in the same season.
The Navy track and field program has had six selections in the last five seasons, including five first-team accolades.
This season, Navy student-athletes have garnered 12 Academic All-America awards, surpassing the previous Navy record for the most in a single academic year of 11 (2015-16). Only Stanford (22), Alabama (20), and Minnesota (15) had more Academic All-America selections than Navy during the 2020-21 year.
Casey is a distance runner, majoring in aerospace engineering with a 4.00 grade point average. He is a multi-time member of the Naval Academy's Superintendent's list, Commandant's list, and Dean's list, while ranking in the top 25 in overall order of merit and academic order of merit for the Class of 2022. Casey is a three-time member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team. He has been a member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll each year for both cross country and track and field. On the track, Casey is a three-time Patriot League Champion and a five-time All-Patriot League performer. In addition, he is a two-time IC4A All-East athlete.
Johnstone participated in the multi-events and pole vault for the Midshipmen. A mathematics with economics major with a 4.00 GPA, he was the Valedictorian for the Naval Academy's Class of 2021, finishing first in his class in overall order of merit and academic order of merit. Johnstone was the 2021 Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as a member of the Academic All-Patriot League Team. He was on the Patriot League Honor Roll for four years. Johnstone was a three-time All-Patriot League performer, including a two-time Patriot League Champion. In addition, he was a 2021 IC4A All-East athlete in the pole vault.
