Mids Power Past Hofstra in 35-6 Road Victory

The Navy wrestling team (1-2, 1-1 EIWA) secured its first win of the 2021-22 campaign by earning victories in eight of the 10 bouts to defeat Hofstra (2-9, 1-3 EIWA) 35-6 on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in New York.

The Series
• Sunday's dual marked just the seventh meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to January of 1961.
• Meeting for only the second time (2019) since 1974, Navy now leads the all-time series 7-0.
• Navy has won all three duals contested at Hofstra (19-13 in 1961 // 24-0 in 1962 // 35-6 in 2022).
• While Navy head coach Cary Kolat is now 2-0 all-time against the Pride, he is 1-0 at the helm of the Navy program (1-0 at Campbell).

The Highlights
• Four of Navy's eight victories earned bonus points with a pair of falls (Crebs, Koderhandt), one tech fall (Cerniglia) and an injury default (DelViscio).
• Navy never trailed in the match and won the first-three bouts before sophomore Grady Griess, appearing in his first-collegiate dual, dropped a 4-2 decision at heavyweight to 19th-ranked Zachary Knighton-Ward.
• The 29-point victory was Navy's largest margin of victory since shutting out George Mason 44-0 a year ago in Annapolis.
• Cael Crebs (Fr / 174 / Montoursville, Pa.) made a huge statement in his first-collegiate dual appearance by pinning fellow rookie Ericson Velasquez in just under 6 minutes.
• Returning NCAA qualifier David Key (So / 184 / Norcross, Ga.) returned to the lineup after missing the last handful of matches and upset 27th-ranked Charles Small 3-2. Key held the early lead, but needed the escape to start the third for the go-ahead point.
• Three-year starter and 26th-ranked Jacob Koser (Jr / 197 / Dillsburg, Pa.) closed out the weekend with a pair of wins after handling Hofstra junior Trey Rogers 8-2.
• Dayton DelViscio (Fr / 125 / Media, Pa.) was awarded the victory in what was his first-collegiate dual appearance after his foe, freshman Jacob Moon, was injured just over a minute into the first period and was unable to continue. DelViscio had just been awarded two points for the reversal when the match was stopped due to Moon's injury.
• Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.) is now 5-0 this season in wins by fall, pinning redshirt sophomore Matt Templeton in his first match of the season.
• Tyler Hunt (So / 141 / Calhoun, Ga.) needed extra minutes to post his first-career dual win. Hunt overcame a 4-2 deficit in the final minute to force sudden victory thanks to an escape and riding time he acquired in the second period by riding out Justin Hoyle. Hunt notched the match-winning takedown 35 seconds into the two-minute extra period.
• Jonathan Miranda (Sr / 149 / Poway, Calif.) went 2-for-2 on the weekend after bumping up a weight class. He followed up his 4-3 win over Lehigh's Paul Watkins with a 3-1 victory against Hofstra sophomore Michael Leandrou.
• Returning NCAA qualifier and 18th-ranked Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) dominated freshman Joe McGinty in a 17-0 tech fall (4:24). Cerniglia scored 14 back points, including 10 in the second period en route to his 17th win of the 2021-22 campaign
• Val Park (Jr / 165 / Edmond, Okla.) fell for a second time this weekend after dropping an 8-4 decision to redshirt senior Ricky Stamm. The two wrestlers jostled for position before Stamm saw a seam and was able to get Park on his back for the takedown and what nearly appeared to be a pin at the end of the second period. Park was unable to recover from the four-point (6-2) deficit.

A Look Ahead
• Navy will be back on the road next week when it travels to the state of Ohio to take on the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday at 11:00 am and Cleveland State on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
• Saturday's match against Ohio will be broadcast on ESPN+.
