The Navy wrestling team (4-5, 2-4 EIWA) made a statement in its first home dual appearance of the 2021-22 campaign by winning six bouts en route to a 21-12 victory over Bucknell (11-4, 6-2 EIWA) Friday evening at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md. Rookie
Cael Crebs (174 / Montoursville, Pa.) won the first of four-straight matches by the Midshipmen, as Navy jumped out to a 15-3 lead midway through the dual. Bucknell rallied to win three of the next four bouts to close to within six (18-12), however
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) salted the victory away for the Mids thanks to a 9-3 win against Nick Delp in the final match of the night.
Navy has now won 24 of the 25 duals in the series, including each of the last 20. Meanwhile, the Bison saw their eight-dual winning streak away from Davis Gym come to an end following Friday night's loss to the Mids.
"Tonight we wrestled as a group ... we wrestled the way we train," said second-year Navy head coach
Cary Kolat. "Our team won all the little battles that happen in a seven-minute match and they picked the next man up."
Navy Notes
• Still searching for that go-to lineup, Navy used its eighth different starting lineup in what was its ninth dual of the season.
• Half of Navy's wins were by freshmen -
Cael Crebs (174),
Ryan Catka (285),
Josh Koderhandt (133) - who are establishing themselves as regulars in the lineup.
• 26th-ranked
Andrew Cerniglia (So / 157 / Nazareth, Pa.) pushed his win total to a team-best 22 (22-5) with a 9-3 victory over Nick Delp, while
Josh Koderhandt (Fr / 133 / Belleville, Ill.) and
Ryan Catka (Fr / 285 / Brookhaven, Pa.) claimed their 20th wins of the season. Koderhandt looked to have Kurt Phipps pinned over the final 30 seconds, but walked away with a 7-1 decision. Catka, meanwhile, scored a 5-0 victory over Luke Niemeyer in the dual and tacked on a second win (his 20th) by way of fall (5:11) against Max Harar with an extra match following the dual.
•
Ryan Catka is Navy's first heavyweight to reach 20 wins in a season since Dan Miller posted a 21-13 record during the 2012-13 season.
•
Jacob Koser (Jr / 197 / Dillsburg, Pa.) will be seeking his 20th win of the season on Sunday after pinning (3:49) Mason McCready for his 19th victory of the season and 47th of his career.
• This was just the second home appearance by Navy this season, last wrestling at home on Nov. 20 in the Navy Classic.
