ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy track and field student-athletes
Brett Brady (Phoenix, Ariz.),
Ashwin Briggs (Pickerington, Ohio),
Sean Casey (Vienna, Va.), Annie Taylor (Nashville, Tenn.), and Maddie Warrender (Mount Wolf, Pa.) garnered Academic All-District II accolades for track and field / cross country from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday. All five now advance to the national ballot that will determine CoSIDA's Academic All-America Teams.
To be eligible for the district ballot, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30 through the end of the 2021 fall semester, be at a minimum a sophomore academically and be a starter or key reserve on their respective team.
CoSIDA's District II consists of Division I schools located in Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Each school is allowed to nominate up to four student-athletes for their respective men's and women's district ballots.
Brady, who was the 2021 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for cross country, earned his third All-Academic honor of the year (cross country, indoor, and outdoor). The aerospace engineering major won the 3,000m steeplechase at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship, while also earning First Team All-Patriot League distinction during the cross country season.
Briggs is a six-time Patriot League All-Academic selection. He is a three-time member of the indoor All-Academic team, while also being selected to the cross country team, picking up his second outdoor honor as a senior. In addition, the operations research major is a seven-time All-Patriot League honoree, including a First Team All-Patriot League nod in the 4x800m relay during the 2022 outdoor season.
Casey, who was the 2022 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned his fifth All-Academic selection as a senior. The aerospace engineering major boasts a 4.00 GPA, earning First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American distinction a year ago. On the track, the senior team captain is an eight-time All-Patriot League honoree, including five first-team nods. This outdoor season, Casey was a member of the 4x800m relay team that won the PL title, while finishing second individually in the 800m.
In her first year of eligibility, Taylor was named CoSIDA Academic All-District. She earned 2021 USTFCCCA Scholar Athlete following her freshman season. Taylor was a member of the distance medley relay team that won the Patriot League Championship during the 2022 indoor season, while also earning ECAC All-East distinction in the heptathlon during the 2021 outdoor season.
Warrender is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection (2020, '21, '22), while also claiming Academic All-Patriot League honors three times. The honors English major is a three-time All-Patriot League honoree in cross country and during the outdoor track and field seasons. In addition, Warrender earned ECAC All-East honors as part of the 4x800m relay team during the 2021 ECAC Outdoor Championship.
