Pair of Sprint Football Players Garner Weekly Honors (Sept. 26)
Coming off of a 27-13 Star-Game victory, Navy sprint football had a pair of student-athletes earn weekly awards.
Jack Costigan (Middletown, N.J.) was named the Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA) Co-Athlete of the Week presented by Northrop Grumman, while
Radford Wyrick (Newnan, Ga.) was selected the Collegiate Sprint Football (CSFL) Special Teams Player of the Week.
Costigan shared the NAAA Athlete of the Week honors with senior kicker Daniel Davies, who was the unlikely hero in Navy football's 23-20 double overtime win over East Carolina on Saturday night.
Costigan anchored the Navy defense that limited the potent Army offense to one touchdown and a pair of field goals in the victory over arch rival Army on Friday night. The junior led the team with 13 total tackles, registering five solo stops with a tackle for loss including a half a sack. Costigan posted a pair of tackles on special teams, while notching five stops for 3-yards or less, including combining for a TLF and a sack.
In a defensive game, Wyrick was able to help pin the Black Knight offense deep in its own territory throughout the night. The punter finished with seven punts for 304 total yards, averaging 43.4 yards per punt. Five of his seven punts were placed inside the 20 yardline and the Black Knights returned only two punts for a combined seven yards. Wyrick boomed a career-long 64-yard punt during the game.
