ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy wrestling has its schedule set for the 2022-23 season, as the Midshipmen will begin their third season under the helm of head coach
Cary Kolat.
Navy opens its campaign with the Clarion Open on Sunday, Nov. 6. Navy saw great success at the Clarion Open last season when
Josh Koderhandt (133),
Andrew Cerniglia (157) and
Jacob Koser (197) took first place in their respective weight classes. The three champions were the most from one program at the tournament.
Navy competes in the Bearcat Open in Vestal, N.Y. on Sunday, Nov. 13. Two Mids won individual titles at last year's event, including Cerniglia, while
Cael Crebs (174) and
Hunter Johns (184) both placed second in their respective weight classes.
Navy opens its home ledger on Saturday, Nov. 19 with the 44
th annual Navy Classic (10 a.m.). Koser,
Tyler Hunt (141),
David Key (184) and
Riley Smith (285) were crowned champions, leading the Mids to a third-place finish last year.
Navy then heads west to Las Vegas, Nev., for one of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments in the country, the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two-day tournament is set to take place December 2-3.
The Mids' first dual of the season takes place Sunday, Dec. 11 against in-state rival Maryland in Annapolis at 2 p.m. Navy owns a 57-12-3 record in the series and has defeated the Terps in eight of their last nine meetings.
After the holiday break, Navy opens the new year with the Franklin & Marshall Open on Friday, Jan. 6 in Lancaster, Pa. The Mids will head to Hampton, Va. the weekend of January 13-14 to compete in the Virginia Duals.
The Mids return to Annapolis where they will begin a three-match homestand - all against EIWA opponents. The homestand starts with one of Navy's longest rivals, Lehigh on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. The dual will serve as the 103
rd meeting between the two programs. The last time the two programs met in Annapolis, Navy captured a 21-9 victory over the Mountain Hawks.
Navy will host Hofstra (Jan. 28, 5 p.m.) and Binghamton (Jan. 29, 2 p.m.) on back to back days in Annapolis. The Midshipmen will look to stay undefeated against Hofstra in the eighth meeting of the series, while Navy will look to avenge last year's 19-16 loss to Binghamton in what was the inaugural meeting.
Navy closes the regular season with three road duals, starting with non-conference opponent Lock Haven on Friday, Feb. 3 in Lock Haven, Pa. Navy head coach
Cary Kolat will return to his alma mater for the first time with the Midshipmen.
Navy gets back into EIWA competition the next day, as it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., for a dual against Bucknell. The Midshipmen have dominated the series against the Bison, winning 23 of the 24 matchups, including the last 20.
The regular season concludes with the annual Army-Navy Star Match, slated for February 19 in West Point, N.Y. Navy has dominated the series, owning a 51-10-5 record against the Black Knights. Navy has captured wins in each of the last two Star Matches, including a 20-13 victory over Army at West Point in 2021.
The 2023 EIWA Championship will be hosted by Penn in Philadelphia, Pa. the weekend of March 4-5. Koderhandt (2
nd place), Cerniglia (2
nd place) and Koser (3
rd place) earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championship by way of their finish at the EIWA Championship last season.
The 2023 NCAA Championship will be held in Tulsa, Okla., at the BOK Center March 16-18.
