ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy sprint football team (2-1) returns home on Friday, Oct. 13 as the Midshipmen welcome Caldwell (2-2) to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for a cross-divisional match up. Opening kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. and
live stats will be available throughout the game.
All-Time Series
Navy leads the all-time series between the two teams, 4-0. The Midshipmen are 1-0 against the Cougars at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, playing the other three contests in West Caldwell, N.J. The last time the two teams met in Annapolis, Navy posted a 72-0 victory in 2017 in the inaugural meeting between Navy and Caldwell. The Midshipmen and Cougars also met in 2018 and 2019 in West Caldwell with Navy claiming a 45-14 win in 2018 and a 23-10 victory in 2019. Last season, the teams once again met at Bonnel Field with the Mids besting the Cougars, 26-13.
Last Time: vs. Caldwell (Oct. 1, 2022)
The Navy sprint football team posted a 26-13 road victory against Caldwell at Bonnel Field in West Caldwell, N.J. The Midshipmen used a blocked PAT, a scoop and score, and a pair of 20-plus yard touchdown runs to remain undefeated on the year.
Navy used a handful of big plays to post the victory. Offensive team captain
Alex Totta scored a pair of touchdowns on runs of 21 and 74 yards.
Paul Kuehler blocked an extra point try by Caldwell and
Nadir Emlemdi returned it for a two-point conversion. In addition,
Devyn Martin sacked the Cougars' quarterback, forcing a fumble.
Angelo Labbe picked up the loose ball and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown.
Jack Costigan led the defense with 10 total tackles, while
Major Kent and
Trent Parker finished with nine and eight, respectively. Parker returned a fumble for nine yards, while Labbe's 63-yard return was a crucial play for the Mids.
Totta had an incredible night running the ball. The senior tallied 283 yards on 28 carries (10.1 yards per carry) with a pair of touchdowns. The senior finished eight yards shy of the Navy school record for rushing yards in a game. In addition, he ended with a 21-yard score and a 74-yard jaunt into the end zone.
Quarterback
Brandon Atwood finished the game 13-for-25 for 101 yards with an interception. He added 34 yards on the ground.
Andrew Margiotta led the receiving corps with a team-high four receptions for a team-best 42 yards. Totta added a pair of receptions for 20 yards, while Margiotta churned out 33 yards on the ground on three carries.
Mychal Golden finished the game with six points, going 3-for-3 in point after attempts and adding a 36-yard field goal.
Last Time Out: at Army (Oct. 6, 2023)
Navy dropped a 10-3 decision to Army in the annual Star Game, which is part of the overall Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA, at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y. The loss snapped a streak of four consecutive victories by the Midshipmen over the Black Knights.
The game pitted two of the CSFL's best defenses against one another. The two teams played nearly even. Navy tallied 229 total yards of offense, while Army finished with 225 total yards. The Midshipmen finished with 90 yards passing compared to 64 by the Black Knights, while Army outrushed Navy, 161-139.
Navy won the time of possession battle by nearly a 2-to-1 margin. The Midshipmen held the ball for 39:30, while the Black Knights had the ball for 20:30. The Midshipmen converted 10 of 17 third down conversions, while the Mids' defense held the Black Knights to just a 2-for-9 performance on third down.
Devyn Martin led the Navy defense with 12 tackles, including a team-best seven stops. Martin had one of the Mids three tackles for loss, while
Jack Costigan and
Angelo Labbe added TFLs.
Mitchell Waters picked off a Black Knight pass, while
David Niski was credited with a pass breakup. Additionally,
Trent Parker blocked an Army field goal attempt.
Starting quarterback
Brandon Atwood finished the game 10-for-21 for 90 yards with two interceptions. The senior added 41 yards rushing to finish second on the team in rushing behind
Victor Otero, who posted a team-high 88 yards on the ground.
Kai Sasaki led the team with four receptions for a team-high 33 yards, while
Chris Stumpf and
Jobe Long added 14 and 18 receiving yards, respectively.
Mychal Golden scored the only points of the night for the Midshipmen, nailing a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter. The senior placekicker attempted a 45-yard field goal just before halftime, but the ball was just off the mark.

Following the home game with Caldwell, the Midshipmen will host Chestnut Hill in a Collegiate Sprint Football League South Division game. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available.
