Navy Men Win, Women Place Second at West Virginia Swimming & Diving Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team placed first and the school's women's team placed second at the West Virginia Invitational held over the last three days in Morgantown, W.Va.

The Navy men's team totaled seven event wins on its way to accruing 2,358 points to win the title over the host Mountaineers by a healthy 700 points.  The Navy women's team had seven individual event medalists to help the Mids score 1,185 points and narrowly finish 21 points in back of meet-champion West Virginia.

"With our competing in this meet and facility for the first time, I was really pleased with how we performed," said Navy men's swimming head coach Bill Roberts.  "We leave here with a lot of takeaways; some we feel really good about and some we need to continue to improve upon.  As a whole, this was a valuable and important experience that gave us a good gauge of where we stand at this point in the season."

"We were very pleased with the overall performances this week," said Navy women's swimming head coach John Morrison.  "Our first day was not our best, but we were pleased with the turnaround on the second day that brought us to within striking distance of a good West Virginia team."

Ben Irwin and Jonah Harm each won a pair of events for the Navy men's team.  Irwin placed first in both of the backstroke events and Harm won the 50 free and 100 fly finals.  The Mids also won both springboard diving events as Blakeman Shaw won the one-meter board and Finn Gelbach placed first in the three-meter event.

Navy also won the men's 400 medley relay.  The foursome of Irwin, Harm, Patrick Colwell and Everet Andrew combined for a winning time of 3:12.29.

Mackenzie Kim won the one-meter diving event for the Navy women's team.  She also claimed the silver medal in platform diving and earned the bronze medal on the three-meter board.

Placing second in an individual event were Gabi Baldwin and Ela Habjan.  Baldwin finished in second place in the 200 free and Habjan touched the wall second in the 100 back.  Third-place finishers for the Mids were Baldwin in the 200 back and Caroline Irwin in the 200 fly.

Navy will next be in competition December 7 when the Mids play host to Army.
