CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team was one of 10 teams that qualified to compete in the ICSA Match Race National Championship this weekend in Charleston, S.C., as the Midshipmen took eighth in the regatta.
Â
The regatta took place over the course of three days and excellent sailing conditions allowed for a very efficient event on the College of Charleston's fleet of J/22s, as the schools were able to complete the entire 10-team initial round-robin competition on the first day.
Â
Navy got off to a rough start on Friday but began to sail better towards the end of the day, finishing the round with two wins. Saturday began with a repechage round to determine the final two places in the knockout round, with the Midshipmen coming out strong and winning their first two races to secure a place in the knockout round.
Â
Navy's opponent in the quarterfinal happened to be none other than Georgetown, the same team the Mids faced in the finals of the MAISA match race championship, as a hard-fought battle ended in the Hoyas' favor, with Navy getting knocked out of the competition. Based on the results of Friday's round-robin, Navy's team of sophomore
Nathan Smith, senior
Hunter Anderson and juniors
Tanner Kelly and
Maggie Schuler wound up eighth overall.
Â
Navy concludes the fall season on Nov. 11-12 at the ISCA Singlehanded Championships in New Orleans, La., with freshman
Kate Zurinskas and senior
Trenton Shaw representing the Mids.
